This summer my daughter and I will be riding Hwy 1 from the start in the south all the way north and then onto the coast of Oregon, down inland to Yosemite and back to Phoenix AZ

Wondering if anyone can help me on camping spots or must see place to stay as we wind along the coast of CA. Thanks for any help in advance.

This is one of my favorite places to stop for a cool drink, maybe some food and the view. A bit pricey but considering where it is I guess it’s acceptable. I usually also stop to see the elephant seals on the beach on the way up.
Let me see if I can dig up info on that as well.

I’m headed up the coast on Thursday to Portland so I’ll keep you in mind and try to report back. Anything specific you want to know about? What’s your daughters interests?

Just remembered this place as well. I thinks it’s one of the best views of the golden gate.

She is mostly into photography so she should be busy with this trip. She has done two week long trips with me before so she loves the ride as well.

At its northern end near Rockport Hwy-1 turns inland away from the coast and connects to Hwy-101 at Leggett. The stretch of coast from that point north to about Ferndale is known as the Lost Coast. Its mostly undeveloped and sparsely populated. We always loved taking the bikes through there to camp on Mattole Beach near the town of Petrolia.

Campground is right on the beach, always lots of driftwood to burn

Cheeky locals... this is on Usal Rd

Heading up Hwy 1, right turn on Nacimiento Road. Once on the peak, turn right. There is some camping that way or you can go over the peak and there is camping on the downhill side heading east.

One of our favorites is San Simeon Creek State Campground. It's off Hwy 1, just north of the town of Cambria. The beach, and a small cove are within walking distance and at night you are rocked to sleep listening to the surf break on the beach. The tent area is separate from the RV camping area. Coin operated showers and water taps throughtout the park. https://www.stateparks.com/san_simeon_beach_state_park_in_california.html

Don't miss the ribs at the Main Street Grill at the north end of Cambria, bring cash, they don't take credit cards. https://www.firestonegrill.com/locations/main-street-grill-cambria/

Just north of the campground is a viewing area for the elephant seals and Hearst Castle. http://www.elephantseal.org/locations.htm

Seals are free, Hearst Castle, not so much.

ETA: Another fav is the Fernwood Resort in Big Sur. They have camping for tents, as well as RVs, Forest cabins, adventure tents, and tent cabins. The CG is down a fairly steep hill and we were within feet of the Big Sur River. There's a tavern/bar and grill at the top of the hill, that has pretty good food ,and on some nights they have local bands for entertainment. https://www.fernwoodbigsur.com/

I'll second the campground off of Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd on the Big Sur Coast. That's Prewitt Ridge Campground. It has zero amenities, but views for days. I took a ride up there last summer and captured this video along the way.

Make sure to check out the drive-thru tree in Leggett, CA.
