Excellent article about the Blackwater 100. The 6th pic down is me, the photo was taken by Davey Coombs.
That’s a great article. That pic of you; what’s that bike, and what year was that?
PS: You were thinner then.
Wow Tim, your are a legend. A great read on the event. Wide open fun of the old days as it should be....
That bike was a KX250, maybe 1989?
I remember one year I rode a Can Am 175 Qualifier in the Blackwater and there was so much damage to the bike I just threw it away after the race. I never even washed it afterwards.
I keep trying to tell him that (and anyone else that'll listen) he just shrugs his shoulders..
From the article: “The Blackwater 100 made the Baja 1000 look like a trail ride,” shares former pro motocross racer and Wiseco employee at the time, Steve Johnson. “I have ridden them both and finished.”
So many stories about this race...
The race ran through the town and everyone would pit wherever they could find a spot. I parked my truck in front of a house that was on the course. The mom comes out with a card table to set up and handed us some lemonade, the dad opens his garage and wheels out his Snap on toolbox, while junior brings the milk crate. I pulled in for gas after the first lap and they tightened and lubed my chain, cleaned my goggles, and put fresh gloves on me, before I even asked. I didn't know them and it didn't matter, that's just what they did on race day.
The atmosphere was the best part of the race, and ultimately what killed it. You'd ride up to the 93 river crossing and there would be 20,000 fans lining the river.
The fans would be out in the peat bogs and you would aim for the tallest person because that was likely the driest highest ground, or a stump. Sometimes the stump would give you a little traction, sometimes it would stop the bike and you would fly over the bars and land in the peat. When you landed the ground around you would ripple like water. I remember one year the peat was so soft they used National Guard choppers to get some of the stuck bikes out.
Shelley and I were out at the same time in Kremmling CO but we took the RV with the bike and stayed at a campground on the other side of town. I had 2 other buddies with me and we had a great time riding the area. We headed out Sept 4th (Wed) after work and arrived in Kremmling on Sat. It's a long way across the country but we made an adventure of it and had a great time together out there for about 2 1/2 weeks! Ride on peeps!! :)
