Joe. that's good news, but i remember the goal was higher than actually raised. i also know that people handed $$ and spent their hard-earned money beyond normal while we were there during the holidays.

truth it's not the amount but the outpouring of support from the community that matters.

not endorsing civil disobedience, a busy campground will bring some income to help in their finances.

The last several years I've been truck camping using a tent that sets up in the bed of my truck.

It was a big upgrade from a tent on the ground, but it was never a good experience in the cold and I never could find a suitable sleeping set up. I was also very interested in getting my truck into an overlander set up but didn't want to give up the truck bed. Doing an online research dive I stumbled on a company in South Africa that had been building safari rigs for 20 years. Some emails and a few phone calls later and a true African Safari roof top tent was on a boat and heading for CA.

All mounted up and ready for a beauty shot
    [IMG]

Now that I've got everything pretty dialed in; power to the tent, bedding, pillows, entertainment unit ... I'm ready for a test flight with some other like minded peeps and head for the desert.

    Everything coming together nicely

We had an ideal spot shielded from the stormy winds blowing last Friday and all was looking good ... but it was already getting cold and we knew it was going to get down into the 20's.

    Plenty of firewood though
    [IMG]

We knew it was going to be cold but I was super toasty all night and was surprised to look out the door to this:

I'll stay under the covers for a bit longer
    [IMG]

After waiting for it to warm up a bit, time to get riding. Awesome day ahead of us ... and it won't be hard to follow where we're going.

Right out of camp and straight up into some challenging ridge line tracks. Then some wandering trails through hills and canyons.

After a day of roaming around, time to head back to camp. My buddy Taso still recovering from a horrible crash in Baja seems to be getting his mojo back
    [IMG]

Pulled along side of Tory for a quick shot then he rolled on the throttle of his 701
    [IMG]

Saturday night wasn't near as cold as the night before but we still lit up a raging fire that stayed hot late into the night. The Overlander/Moto Hauler break in crew; Taso, Tory, Todd Lite and Shawn
    [IMG]

Sunday morning and I need to figure out the hot spots on the new cook top
    [IMG]

It's a long story but we jokingly called our camp site the Rape Den based on our discovery of a well built shelter in a place that was intentionally hard to spot. It has a concrete floor, built in bench and counter along with a nice fireplace. Very Manson like.

    The un-Manson like camp

Overlander/Moto Hauler is still a work in progress but ready to take on more California Adventures.

    Haha, thanks joel!
You really should come up to kern river valley and visit. Make some fun video.

California - the adventure republic is quite aptly named.
Some folks talk about skiing and surfing in the same day, for me right now it's snow riding and then sand dunes. It's all keeping me sort of sane during these crazy times!

Nice! I drove by the base on Superbowl Sunday and it looked clear from Pauma. I know the town has snow.

I’d like to hit Thomas Mtn outside Anza soon too.

    Thanks for sharing the pic

It was completely clear until the timber line, at which point it looked like this or much worse up to the top.

I've never done Thomas Mountain but want to try it. I'm headed to Idyllwild on February 26 but I'm not sure it would be open due to snow.

    @bigtodd,
Great setup!! Been thinking about the same thing, (for party of 1 trips, when I don't take the family and toyhauler and it's just me)
    1. What brand tent did you go with?
    2. Do the 2 yakima load bars secure it enough?
    3. Is the awning attached to the cross bars or the lower tent section?[/QUOTE]
