Lots of clouds rolling in this afternoon, so we decided to start aiming back towards camp.

We picked a route that took us back over the east side of Opal Mtn

Selfie at the hidden dry lake near Murphy's Well
    [IMG]

We worked our way southeast, trying to find the F-104 crash site.

Lots and lots of fresh red stakes made it hard to get there directly, but we finally found it 'legally' :bluduh
    [IMG]

Next up was the XB-70 crash site
    [IMG]

Dark clouds looking like we might see some rain, so we made our way out to Copper City road and boogied back to cmap :pynd
    [IMG]

Found Chu (headstaller) and Robbie (rjnutt) at camp :wave, but still no sign of Joel :dunno
Finally heard he was running late and had stopped in Barstow to pick up supplies.

Troy and Mike were staying at a cozy hotel in town anyhow, so we made plans to meet for dinner at DiNapolis Firehouse

Back at camp and time for proper camp fire :kumbaya
    [IMG]

I don't even think we made it to 9pm before the cold drove us all away to our sleeping bags :snore

These winter days are too short and the nights are too long (and cold :vardy)

Was a XLNT day in the dez with my son, took him on some OLD dez single track that nobody had been on for quite sometime
    [IMG]
Eventually made it over to the Bird Sanctuary
    [IMG]
    Then off to Magnolia mine
    [IMG]
Getting the truck started was NOT happening!
Overall was an Exceptional day, was literally crystal clear out in the dez but definitely chilly. We did 50 miles total & for my son that a LOT, truly only his 3rd time of real riding & he's hooked!

Not many photos taken, sorry had to bail early for business and on Friday knew my time was limited so had to get a good rip in on the xr650r b4 turn for home.

Vastness and emptiness made this a great ride. I didn't see any other riders but us on the trails. Friday saw 4 jeeps at inscription canyon on my way back in from Fremont/Husky area. Nothing moving, no bikes, jeeps, rzrs.

found this one a few years back west of petroglyphs south of Husky

An F-22 Raptor crashed here on March 25, 2009. While scouting out the crash site from four miles away, I was briefly detained by some very polite Air Force Security Forces on ATVs. I was told that there a UAV present over the crash scene. The entire site was excavated and sifted. Some plants were even planted back in non-random order.

Prior commitments limited me to outing with the 'crews' on Friday.
Thanks Joel for organizing, Matt for leading and our sweep (my broken sunglasses is totally worth the help rendered :D)
Awesome group of people to ride with.
What can I say... smaller bike brought the hooligan out of me :lol3

thanks. it's been a tradition for us to freeze our butts in the desert days before the new year.

nice to be able to see other places on another form of 2 wheels. i've been dependent on ICE and starting to lose my leg muscles.

those pedal assist bikes seems to be a good option for my aging body.

    dan thanks for the link.

sorry to hear about the pilot. too much g force incapacitated him.

the 501 makes a huge difference.

glad to see you chu using the jimmy lewis techniques attacking the steep downhills and more. i have to rely on that too and builds up confidence.

one thing we didn't learn is how to deal with the strong wind once you reached the top.....:lol3

rider914 instructed me that once i got to the top, turn the bike so that the wind will be on my back.

i screwed up by passing a rider and not stopping on the blind rise to asses the next moe. right after, deep sand waiting and swallowed me in one piece. tweaked my already sore right shoulder, but now feeling better. thanks to HBSurfdad for lifting the bike out, much better service than the auto club can provide.....and it's free...:D

    Very cool Shawn :clap

I was surprised at how few people we saw all weekend. Certainly more folks on saturday, but still mostly focused around the toy-hauler camps off Copper City.

Ready for a 'few' more pics from Day 2 (friday) campout at Owl Canyon? :ear
Joel already gave his report on the previous page :thumb
    Here is my take...

Rise and shine everybody! (Can't tell from the pic, but was actually pretty cold and windy :vardy)

We had six in our group today... Joel (NSFW), Robbie (rjnutt), Chu (headstaller), Alan (aanichols), Troy (HBSURFDAD), and myself.

Out of camp, southeast on Fossil Bed, then left on a powerline paralleling Copper City
    [IMG]

Alan keeping pace on his shiny new 690 :tb
    [IMG]

Winding thru some mud hills just before Copper City
    [IMG]

Oops! :muutt Joel got clipped by a sand demon coming over the rise
    [IMG]

Next was Chu's turn when wind and a slick off-camber conspired to put him on the ground :doh
    [IMG]

If this is the hill you mean, I was trying to say go straight over the top without turning.
There was a strong headwind at the crest that would try to blow you over if you turned sideways to it :nod

(Sorry for any poor communication :hide)

Moving on... we crossed Copper City and circled south on Old Yermo Cutoff.

Regrouping at Fort Irwin Road... Robbie, Joel, and Chu
    [IMG]

After a quick mile of pavement, we turned into the Calico Hills on Silver Bow mine road (CM7615)

I had never explored this area before, but some satellite view snooping told me we could make a loop through the hills and connect with roads we had used a few years ago. At the same time, we could check out a few notable waypoints and landmarks. What the satellite view doesn't always tell you is what obstacles you may encounter along the way.

    Dropping into Wall Street wash
    [IMG]

First real obstacle of the day was a short rocky drop through a narrow cut.

    Alan
    [IMG]

    Chu
    [IMG]

Robbie got hung up on the big boulder and created a little bottleneck
    [IMG]

    Joel with Troy close behind
    [IMG]

Some fantastic colors in this canyon :nod
    [IMG]

The vehicle route ends suddenly at the top of Wall Street Canyon
    [IMG]

Good place to take a break...

... before I make the guys ride back up what we just came down :evil

On the way out, we had to climb back through an alley of boulders and deep soft sand.

    Robbie cleans the section :clap
    [IMG]

    chu takes his shot :pynd

Notice that both times Chu gets in trouble is just after he plops his butt back down on the seat :nod

    Joel was doing good :clap
    [IMG]

    ...until :p3rry
    [IMG]

    More colorful canyon
    [IMG]

Next up was the rocky step :yikes

Joel cleaned it like a pro :clap
    [IMG]

Chu gives it a go :thumb
    [IMG]

Troy thumps his way on up :D

Now time to climb out ofthe wash...

... and across the hillsides ...

... and over to Calico Mines.

Low angle of the sun was playing havoc with my camera. The view (above) looking down towards Yermo was the only shot that was half decent. Everything else was washed out and blurry. In any case, there has been some crazy digging activity at the Calico Mines area that might be worth another look.

There are also a couple notable (infamous?) routes heading down towards Calico from this point, but I have never (yet) taken them and didn't want to get into anything too serious on the way down. The challenging terrain was giving a couple members of our group a good workout and I thought it better to aim for a known easy(er) way home.

Turns out there was one more tricky climb to make

Joel made it up with just a little drama
    [IMG]

Troy torqued his way over the top

Chu was clearly getting tired, but held on for a wild ride :yikes (while Robbie made it look easy :brow)

    Everyone over the top :clap
    [IMG]

We skipped Doran and Phillips and aimed for easy Mule Canyon instead
    [IMG]

Joel, Chu, and ever faithful sweep Troy :thumb
    [IMG]

    Down through the mud hills
    [IMG]

    :wave
    [IMG]

Well after 2pm by the time we all reached the bottom of the canyon at Calico Road.
Guess we'll skip lunch today and start heading back towards camp.

    But first...

A quick stop to play at the mud tunnels in Odessa Canyon
    [IMG]

There is even a swiss-cheese mud cave that you can ride into... spooky :uhoh
    [IMG]

Play time over... we gotta get back to camp :pynd

Ghost Town road to Yermo Cutoff, then straight across Fort Irwin road along the pipeline
    [IMG]

I waved the group ahead and made a quick pit-stop, figuring I should catch up in short order :norton
    [IMG]

Somewhere along here was another sand demon encounter :muutt
I didn't actually see the attack, so the victim shall remain nameless :augie

For one last bit of fun, I chased Chu around the short Rainbow Basin loop near camp :ricky
