after putting that many miles today, i can say that this monkey is NOT a TOY... it can really go to many places include dirt roads. the uphill is not too bad but downhill, it's a serious squid bike. really happy with it's performance and of course, the fun factor is very high.

Wow, what a awesome series of pics and rides!
Pretty special you got to ride in on the West Fork and to the dam, thats a rare treat. I have hiked there many times.

That monkey looks like a crazy amount of fun!

2019.12.27-29 Annual Post Christmas Desert Ride (Calico - Barstow)

it has been raining and it's cold, even worse it's snowing in the higher elevation! who would want to camp overnight and ride in those conditions? btdt...and several of us like it. this is our 4th year and what else could go wrong.

the forecast during the day. freezing temp at night but with the right sleeping bag, we'll survive.

the plan is camp at Owl Canyon C.G. - a BLM managed public land and only cost $6/night
    [IMG]

the riding routes. Owl Canyon is northwest of #9
    [IMG]

left the house at 12 noon and the drive on the 14N was nice until
    [IMG]

got stuck in traffic for 1.5 hours. apparently a big rig hit black ice earlier and jack-knifed in the middle of the freeway
    [IMG]

entire Palmdale was covered with snow
    [IMG]

it was already dark when i reached the Rainbow Basin junction. the authorities were quick in putting the signs on some of the muddy or impassable road.

earlier, i was relying on Google Map to take me to Owl Canyon CG. it was telling me to go first to Hinkley. apparently the road closure on Irwin Rd. prompted Google to take a detour...good i know how to get to camp, but the other guys got sucked in
    upload_2020-1-1_21-56-23.png

when i got to camp, the guys are already enjoying the campfire....:kumbaya

    temp that evening

    thanks!

hehehe...that XR will outlast a lot of other bikes. this was like 2 weeks ago before the trip. it sat for a year and after putting it together, fuel added.....3 clicks and it fired up. yes, this one has a magic button as you can see a red object on the right side of the handlebar.

wasn't sure if the rest of the trail is washed out. Matt, Russ, John and i continued on to investigate. several hill climbs were rocky and rutty. Matt lead and showed us the good lines.

    @NSFW Great pics Joel :clap

Here are a few of mine ....

Driving up thru the Cajon Pass friday morning... Snow was solid over the top and all the way past Victorville.

No traffic delays for me and a really nice drive thru the desert.
Low temp on the truck gage was 37F near Wild Wash, but mid 40's in Barstow, and approaching 50 by the time I got to camp.

Making the turn towards Rainbow Basin...

There were "road closed ahead" signs when I left the pavement, and "road closed" baricades at the entrance to Rainbow Basin, but the road to Owl Cyn campground was clean and smooth all the way.

Arrived at camp a bit after noon and met John @Spank and John @scarysharkface already there. They were both about to head out on exploratory rides. I took my time unloading and setting up before heading out for some exploration of my own :ricky

Owl Canyon creek was flowing. So cool!

I buzzed out to the main road and hooked around to an old gravel pit due east of camp for a little :2guns

More water flowing in the desert. Awesome :thumb
    [IMG]

Found some nice single-track wandering thru the Waterman Hills :ricky
    [IMG]

Snow covered Ord Mountains in the distance.

Shadows getting long and temps dropping... Time to head back to camp :pynd

    It's right over there :nod
    [IMG]

Rolling back into the campground, I noticed that garbage was spilling from a couple of the critter-proof containers. Looked like some previous guests did a piss poor job of securing their waste :boid

The ADV crew sprung into action with John, John, and newly arrived Ben @TrashBird making quick work of the cleanup :thumb
    [IMG]

    All cleaned up :clap
    [IMG]

Reward was spending a fine evening getting to know new (and old) friends around an awesome campfire :kumbaya

since there was some daylight left, thought of possible hiking
    [IMG]

once i parked the bike, getting into warmer clothes seems to be more important and start the campfire
    [IMG]

very nice hanging around the campfire, it was in the 40F but we had plenty of firewood to keep us toasty.

    the aftermath
    [IMG]

Sunday morning we decided to do some riding drills before heading out for more dirt.

really glad we were able to keep the tradition alive...4 years in a row now. i agree, it was tough to get out of a heated house and camp away from home at freezing temp. even sleeping inside the van was cold; though afterward my body was thankful to spend the post-xmas days away from the excess of the holiday celebration.

looking forward to the 5th post-xmas ride.
