no worry, everyone knows the protocol "wait at the turns" but that goes with the dust clouds once the thrill of the throttle takes over.

    :(

don't know if there's another words to say this "you're responsible for the guy behind you" ..............at the bottom of Liebre near ORR, we found the novice rider RideEm50 alone and clueless where to go. we picked him and asked him to follow us.

after lunch at Rock Inn, it's time for Liebre.......:clap

it's great to see Maxwell Rd open again. we didn't know this and glad flying.moto suggested it. this was closed for at least 8 years. at the time, one of the property owners will be by his gate and asking us to slow down. so now you know it's open, please slow down while riding here as we did last Saturday.

    Meanwhile,

I learn the limits of my skills with the White Crow, again...

    The hard way!

    But the results were epic!

Best random shots of yesterdays' exploration! :ricky

No pitbulls on the next section... yet, nice short section of single track has been found! :smile6

    And the views... my my...

Magic! But! What's over that way?! :evil

Then the reality bit... bit harder than it said it would! I need more training with my YZ.... :p3rry

    Damn that turn! :dirtdog

But hey... the scenery was good!

We even found a "Horny Toad"! :lol3

But then... yeah... i gotta get in better shape... riding and all...

is this "face plant" worthy? The Crow has been dropped 12+ times after all :rofl

It was even harder to get out of there! I wish that turn wasn't there, on the dreaded sand hill... i'd make it no problem then.... :p3rry

First one I saw... I bet I walked past them before... barely noticed this one. :norton

First time I saw a scorpion in the wild too... sorry, no photo... was too busy being dehydrated and contemplating the meaning of life.... and extra steep deep sand hillclimbs with turns in them :augie:loco:hmmmmm:rofl

Made it up to Carizzo Plain yesterday. Had a nice rip up and over the 33, topped off with fuel in Maricopa, and then headed in on Elkhorn Grade Road. This is at the top - as you can see, everything is completely dried out by now.
    20200613_114649.jpg

When it's this dry, the downside is no green and no wildflowers, but the upshot is way less people. It was also very comfortably cool - every other time I've been here it's been boiling hot.

Left heads down to Soda Lake Road...
    20200613_115037.jpg

...but I like to go right, it's a little more interesting and far fewer people about - not that there are many in the first place.
    20200613_115052.jpg

If you haven't been here, it's worth the trip. There's a handful of abandoned cattle ranches (and a couple still functioning).
    20200613_120005.jpg

So many random roads heading off from the 'main' route, surprised this one intersection gets signage. Not surprised that I don't think either are correct according to maps I've seen... Elkhorn has turned into Simler by this point, and I can't find Panorama on a map...
    20200614_133801.jpg

Soda Lake is looking as soda-y as always...
    20200613_125652.jpg

I attempted to make a stop at the petroglyphs, but the road was gated further from the trail than I felt like hiking in heavy moto boots. Instead, I stopped to check out the 2 campgrounds in the monument. Selby Campground was pretty full - there might have been one spot left, and people were even camping in some of the small parking areas on the road on the drive up. There was a pretty big group of guys playing loud music... it would have annoyed me to be camping there with that. Even so, they were nice guys and offered me one of the hamburgers they were grilling up as I packed up to head out from my granola bar lunch. I declined as I wanted to just keep moving.
    20200613_132052.jpg

KCL campground looked a little less busy and more quiet.

I took Soda Lake Rd all the way out - it's a mixture of rough pavement and W-I-D-E fast gravel. 60mph here feels totally reasonable.
    20200613_135253.jpg

One last photo stop on the way out. I think they must have re-paved this section recently. There are no more of the bike-swallowing pot holes I remember from a year or 2 ago.
    20200613_140920.jpg

Back over the 33... this is a magnificent piece of asphalt.
    20200613_150325.jpg

And then home in plenty of time before dinner.

Mark, all in one day and still have time to do dinner at home....great Carriso is in our backyard. 33 is one of my favorite highways.

Thanks for posting your day-tripper ride report.

Thanks for posting this, great pics! I’m wondering if you could say how doable do you think Elkhorn Grade Road is on a big bike (Vstrom 650)?

A Vstrom could do Elkhorn no problem, as long as you've got 50/50 tires. It gets a little sandy but otherwise relatively mild. I used to have a DL1000 and it did fine out there.

Yup, Elkhorn would be fine provided you had something like a TKC80 or similar. The sand is never deep, nor long stretches, but it sneaks up on you and can be in the turns.
