Going back a month ago, it seemed the weekend after Halloween would be a pretty safe time to pick for our Desert Season Opener and a trip to Laughlin. Most would have postponed a couple days out based on the weather forecasts but not us ... we were the ones out there a couple years ago skirting flash floods and washed out roads.

The team assembled and almost ready to go; me, @ToddLite , @dzrtracin and Tall Tory. We had to turn Shawn's bike around as the wind almost blew it off the kickstand in the parking lot.

The last couple trips, most of the deep sand spots were no big deal., in fact the last trip Manix Wash was almost a road. The Mojave River has it's teeth back ...

Tory on his new 701 excited and showing some optimism to tackle the deep sand
    [IMG]

At the end of Manix, Tory a little winded and Shawn describing the sand snakes

It's been at least 5 years since the water crossing into Afton Canyon has been passable on a bike. The jeepers have dug some deep holes and the water levels have not gone down much. As we road up the crest above the crossing we saw a big crew of workers on the trestle bridge and my heart sank; water or out to Hwy 15. We got really good news however as somebody has done some major repairs to the water crossing.

Tory's fight was just beginning in Manix, the teeth were out through Afton Canyon as well. How much does a new Husky shift lever cost?

Riding up towards Black Canyon I spotted a glistening off in the distance. I took cover and radioed Shawn a heads up.

Shawn kept coming and didn't hear my radio call that somebody was on the hill
    [IMG]

Now I'm screaming on the radio, STOP, STOP ... THERE'S A SNIPER ... but it was too late
    [IMG]

Miraculously Shawn survived and we kept rolling. The wind was cold, the rain was cold and I took the boys on a go around of the long whoop section east of the Mailbox
    [IMG]

Forest fires reached all the way out here.

We had a great time blasting through the two track between the cactus east of Cima Rd.

In all the fun, the 701 stepped out a bit and the dez took another bite. Fixing a busted rear brake lever while the hail pours down

One more push up and over Piute Pass

After Tory's incident with the shifter, we had made an emergency call to @GalacticGS who made the hour drive from Havasu and delivered a replacement for the low low cost of a cold beer. Larry is the MAN!

Several more beers, some college football and possibly the greatest nachos I've ever had; Trash Can Nachos
    [IMG]

Sunday morning and ready to roll back, Shawn doesn't see any oil in his sight glass. Not willing to risk a problem in the middle of the dez, he grabs some oil and decides to slab back with AAA as a back up. Me, Todd Lite and Tory head west into the sunshine and blue sky
    [IMG]

Then the weather turned again, dark skies and more rain. Oh yeah, lots of wind.[IMG]

Still, the Mojave Road Trail is one of my favorites and I never get tired of riding it.

When are we going again? :ricky

What is going on with the 701?

I've never seen somebody do that to a bike before!

    Nice report.

@bigtodd .. Looks like a fun (albeit chilly) ride. I've pretzeled my shift & Brake levers.. got some stout aluminum ones. I know.. risk of putting the breaking pressure on the shaft, bearings, or cases. w/e.

The Afton crossing has always been a hard bottom. I think the rocks etc. were slowing sinking into the river bed. I was stuck in the mud in a Mojave River crossing about 5 clicks West of that crossing 25-odd years ago. There is no bottom to that stuff. Black as night and smells worse than whatever dead thing your dog rolled in the other night. A friend was out there shortly after it was 'repaired' and his guesstimation from the debris/tracks/etc. was that it was the RR who made it shallow again. Bummed him out because it used to be that he was one of the few RR photographers who could and would cross it. Now everyone can.

I’m glad to hear that river crossing has been worked on. The last time I went through it was pretty hairy!

What a coincidence...Matt @rider914 , our buddy Jeff, and I planned a similar ride the same weekend....but after a lot of back-and-forth we decided to postpone. I'm may have been the most disappointed because I had bailed on the Pahrump rally to do this ride. About Thursday I was bugging Matt again letting him know the weather forecast looked good. He was having a busy week at work but said he would try to make it happen. At that point I knew he was in.
Unfortunately Jeff couldn't make it so it was just the 2 of us.

    Saturday morning looking over Lucerne.

The weather couldn't have been better. Just a slight breeze North to South which was perfect for any dust.

More to come....you know Matt has a few pictures.
