I'm hoping to ride Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos this October.

I was recently advised that I likely would not be permitted to travel independently in Cambodia, by a tourist who was there last year. He said he'd met a few others who ended up booking tours when they were prevented from travelling independently (probably by car, I'm not sure about that).

This surprised me as I have not heard anything about it.

Can anybody give me recent first-hand info about it?

    cheers...

I was there in January on an Australian licensed bike crossed from Laos and left through Thailand. Of the 5 countries we went through, only Myanmar insisted we have an escort.
Didn,t go to Vietnam this time because getting my bike across the border would have been near impossible. But on previous trips to Vietnam never a problem free ranging.

    Great thanks for that.

Yes, it didn't sound right and is at odds with everything else that's been posted.

I'm going to give it a shot on a rented Vietnamese bike. The rental guy says he's already had a customer who got into Laos with no drama, but he doesn't know if we'll get into Cambodia. I'm optimistic about that, I'll get all the required documents ready. However, crossing from Cambodia to Laos on a rented Vietnamese bike will be a challenge.

Totally jealous of your ride in Myanmar ... it's in my bucket list!

I crossed from Laos to Cambodia at Nong Nok Kheane (Veun Kham)/Traipang Kriel (Stung Treng), very quite but I had to walk over from Laos to Cambodia to find out if they would allow the bike through, it took me 15 mins to find someone:lol3 they were all in a meeting and no one minding the fort.
No problems just take lots of copies of all the paper work.

Going from Thailand, Cambodia, Laos either way on your own bike is not a problem. You can not do it on a rental and you will not be able to ride a bike into Viet Nam trust me I have tried every border crossing in Cambodia and a few in Laos. There was a time you could ride into the the zone near Ha Tien but this is no longer as well. In the first 3 countries you will not need any escorts in most of Vietnam if you borrow a bike from someone and have the rego card you can ride locally no escorts. There are certain areas that you will not be able to ride in without a good reason and most likely an escort.
