I need a camping ax or hatchet that can cut small branches etc for kindling but yet has a big enough head on the back to drive tent stakes. I need it to be around $40. I need it to be light and have a good quality sheath. This will be kept in my top box and grabbed when time to pitch my tent.

    Thanks in advance.

    Fiskars X7 hatchet.

Maybe you'll want to find a proper sheat though since it comes with a weird hard case.

I've got a Fiskars X5, smaller than the x7 and comes with a good solid sheath. :clap

Eastwing here... i like that it's a forged one piece axe. But go to your local lumber yd, big box store, camping stores, etc and they'll have 3-5 different models.

Also have one of these... and although small and light, there's not enough head weight for typical axe use. Like swinging a bread knife.

That's a good point. Too light and it won't be very good at the things you actually need a camp axe for.

A great effing axe! Without a wedge - like many of the lightweight hatchets - you are not splitting wood.

SOG FastHawk Axe - small and lightweight. Pound in small tent stakes using side of head. It has done the job for me around camp, but it is far from a heavy duty, wood splitting, nail driving axe. $23.91 at Walmart. Nylon sheath included.

You're screwed, because someone is going to post an awesome $300 hatchet that once you see you will be unable to live without.

Man what a wide choice! Will do my research. Anyone heard of the Ultimate Survival Technologies SaberCut Camp Axe?
Don't like the nylon sheath though.
