i have an interest in owning a ural. i've read and checked them out a good deal. it doesn't seem that any piece of the bike is the same as what it was in the 70's. do you happen to own a current one that you can comment on, or just speculation on experience with a 30 year old machine?
i have a gear up. 6500+ kms since i got it at the end of march. in the last 2 weeks, i've rode my 04 GS adv 4 or 5 times. mainly becuase it's been broke. 1st was clutch/drive shafts fix ($900 parts). If i had to pay for labor, i would've need another full time job. now it's a stick coil ($85). i can't think of trying to fix all this fine german engineering while in the middle of nowhere. i think they let the engineers go too fancy. well, the ural has been hauling my fat ax around. not bad for a POS, huh? love the ruskie bike. and the chicks dig it. gotta love being single in hawaii.
I got an older 650cc 1WD Tourist. I love it.
I have a new '06 2WD model on order. Can't wait until it gets here... I'me selling my Harley to get a new Ural. I haven't ridden the H-D much since I got the Ural.
Urals are what they are. If you expect BMW performance and never expect to wrench on it, then you'll be disappointed.
If ya don't mid getting dirty, doing regular maintenence and spinning the wrenches, they're fun bikes.

I purchased a 2006 Patrol two months ago and to date I have had no issues. When I picked it up I took a 1000 mile trip as a long way home from the dealership and I had no problems. This was my first hack/Ural expirience, and it as been great. I hit a deer with it Friday night at 55mph and the only damage was the slight corrosion caused by the mass coating of Deer crap . Any brand will have issues, do a search here on advrider and see. Of course it is not a high speed machine but I have been all over the central U.S. in mine now and really enjoy it. It is two bad that someone feels thay can call the brand POS and then not give their reason and it is good to hear some folks worked in shops in the 70s but it is 2006 and things change. I have had two Urals, a sidecar outfit and a solo bike. I still have the sidecar, but it's on an Airhead. Last weekend, I went with two Ural outfits (an upgraded '98 and an '04 or '05) from Seattle to Hood River, Oregon and back. We went by way of secondary highways and forest service roads. The Ural ran without a hitch. I was pleasantly surprised to find them fully capable of running at 60 to 65 mph on the highway. They both have 750 engines. My old '97 Ural Tourist had a low gear and a 650 and it ran at about 50 mph. They're not for everyone, but Urals are a good rig for what they're meant to do.
The bikes now are light years better than the old ones, but still not the quality of a Honda.
I went on my honeymoon in a 2002 Ural Bavarian Classic and then went on to own it for 3 years. I shipped it to Europe and drove it from Florence (Italy) to the south of spain. Loved the look of the bike and it was a blast to drive (albiet a slooow blast). Trust me, taking a Ural on the italian autostrada *IS* the definition of "adventure."
I had the 750 (first year) and it did not give me a lot of problems. I've heard horror stories from others about the 650s though - stay away if you can. From what I can remember (I sold the rig last year) the entire Ural line has been updated pretty significantly in the last 5-10 years or so (with respect to quality). When I bought mine, they were still being imported by a US Distributor and then parts added to bring them up to DOT spec. I heard varying stories about what were added to the bikes - from electrical components to pistons - but supposedly they were a lot better than the early and russian models. In 2003, Ural began distributing them directly in the US (they had updated the quality themselves), changed the models around a bit, and actually began introducing some "innovations" like disc brakes. I'll bet, though, that they are similar to my 2002 - runs fine, but you need to keep up on the maintenance.
Also, a word on the history - Urals originated from pre WWII copies of BMWs but (I think this is correct) they sold the original machinery for those models sometime in the 50s (Chang Jians?). The current Ural is actually derived from the second round of BMW copies (made in the 50s) so are of slightly newer technology. Ural historians can feel free to point out the error in this account, but this is the way I understood it.
All in all, they are nice bikes. Where else can you get a retro rig for <$10K. Just don't expect to a) run in the fast lane on the highway or b) do no maintenance. They require attention and can be quirky. But they pay you back in fun.
Last point - they may not be super reliable, but you will never find a bike as easy to work on or a group of fellow enthusiasts more willing to help you do it. Even the (loose) dealer network is good - I detonated my final drive (shaft) halfway into Spain and was able to find a dealer who went out of the way to overnight the parts to me. Oh yeah, and the entire assembly (transmission to rear drive - ~8pieces) was about $100... try that on a beemer.
I have 2, a 1995 and a 2003. Both now have the 750 motor. I have only had minor problems that I fix on my own.

Hey take it easy! He's Ural owner after all, and we all know Ural owners are "special".
Why would he do that if he already has 2 Urals? He must be at least fairly well versed on them.
a 12 year old thread come back to life, 'somehow that seems appropriate. In case anyone is reading it and actually wants to know something about them, the bikes have been getting steadily better over the years, 2007 likely being
a good staring point on that. I have a 2008 which I've owned since new w/o significant problem. It is an old design so if you are going to try to push it beyond its limits (say super slab it from left to right coast) you will cause some problems. For puttering along on back country roads with the dog or wife or grand kids or a load of fire wood it's hard to beat. This is not a set-and-forget Japansee bike. Unlike many of those tho it's nearly impossible to ride one w/o a huge grin on your face. In a world of Camry's with radar collision avoidance systems this is a Jeepster but really, that's sort of the point of it.
Just a thought...even though some of these threads may be old the info is still good and possibly new info can be added that makes them better. Just thinking out loud.
I guess that's why we give them a prize.
