I saw the original mini series on CBC up here and then purchased the moved on VHS. A friend knew how much I loved the movie & The Arrow and picked me up a DVD copy. One of the finest planes ever(never) built :deal

Trivia question for those who want to play.
Why was the AVRO Arrow located in Barry's Bay?

    And we've got winners above!

So here's a tie breaker for the two fellows above. No Google, ok?

Which X aircraft was lost over Lake Ontario and where did the flight originate from and why did it happen?
Yes, this is a tough question and there is a trick to it.
    Thread hijack apology in advance.

Is that the unmanned "proof of concept" scale model Arrow launched from Burlington you're talking about?

No, not that one, though that is another excellent story.
I am talking about one of the American X planes and its pilot who was pretty well known at the time.

    "1953 May 12 - .
X-2 explodes in air - . Crew: Ziegler. Nation: USA. Related Persons: Ziegler. Class: Manned. Type: Manned rocketplane. Spacecraft: X-2 . During a Bell captive-carry flight test over Lake Ontario, X-2 number 46-675 suddenly exploded, killing Bell test pilot Jean Ziegler and observer Frank Wolko. The EB-50A mothership managed to land, although damaged. Only after several other mysterious X-plane losses was the cause found to be a rocket engine gasket made of Ulmer leather, which decomposed and became explosively unstable after sustained exposure to liquid oxygen."

    Applause all around.
The trick part was that the plane was being carried, it wasn't in flight by itself so to speak.
Now, back to planes on a stick.

Saw a ton of bikes go around that circle this past weekend. Unfortunately, I was not among them.

At the end of a guy's driveway near Whitefish Lake, AB. I'm guessing he built it himself?
