Today started the 3rd edition of the cannonball, this year its Daytona Beach to Tacoma.
(I also did the last one on a '28 Indian)

Anyhow, this bike is a '29 Harley JD model, 1200cc, 'slightly customized'

Some of you may have seen the build in my garage thread.

No bikes entered newer than a 1936. (Its getting a bit modern :lol3)

Today was a short day, only 140 miles, with a late start. Most days will be 250-300 miles.

My bike made it ok, so Im off to a good start, considering that before today, I had less than 50 miles on it since a total rebuild!

I'll upload pics & stuff as I can, and of course anyone I meet along the way is welcome to post pics on here also.

Now its 11pm, and Im beat.

2 of my trusty crew, EldoMike, truck driver
(yes, Im actually taking a chase truck on this one) And Grigoriy, who made my seat & bags on most of the bikes I have built over the last several years
Polly is also riding along on a Yamaha TDM850

2 of my friends built '36 knucklehead choppers, they are badassed. This is Sean, from LA (not Lower Alabama)

we all lined up on the beach for a photo shoot.
    98 bikes at the start

of course I had a few teething problems & roadside repairs on the 1st day.
A bolt came loose in the case, so I whittled a stick & pounded it into the hole.

Of course as Im not a professional whittler, I lost a few before I got one to really stick good. Every time one fell out, my left leg & the side of the bike got doused with oil. The floorboard got slippery, so I had to install an oil retention pad

And when it started to rain, I remembered that I forgot to put my points cover back on, so I had to make one out of a water bottle. I got drenched, but the points didnt.
    success!

Great to see you getting started! Good luck. Maybe those will be the most intensive repairs of the trip.

I tried to catch you and did overtake a few stragglers, but had to stop for gas on Old Dixie Highway. I figured at that point I probably wouldn't catch up for a long time so I headed for home.

I posted a few of the pics I took down in your Garage thread.

    Have a good run!

Is it too late to buy a shirt now? And how do I buy a shirt?
Are you going to Bulgaria later this year? I will be visiting my parents in October and wanted to stop buy and check out the place,
Best of luck with the Cannonball!

Were the oil retention pads those special ones from the 2012 run?

Wouldn't have thought a chopper woulda been allowed, even with a pre-'39 mill, but hey, if the CB says its ok it's ok. Looking forward to your posts on this, for sure. Looks like you have a little more "infrastructure" with you this time but I'm betting that just means you will be able to help out even more riders than you did last CB!! Now that you got the photo of your pal outta the way....hoping you will catch a shot of the gal on #81! Would she be the first female CB rider?
