Just finished up a small group CannonTrek in Idaho. Took in some nice riding, points of interest, and a modified version of the Idaho Backcountry Discovery Route (IDBDR). Visited some interesting places along the way and (as usual) I'll share some history and stories from the past. I'll also share a GPS file (see bottom of this post) that covers our trip that may be of use to others. We spent about two weeks on the trip with about eight days of that on the BDR related portion.

Plenty of great scenery along the way.

Rather than wait until we get to the BDR portion in the ride report, let me take a moment now to thank the BDR folks for their excellent offering with the IDBDR. I scout and share a lot of routes myself and can appreciate the time, effort, and expense that goes into this kind of sharing. I deeply appreciate their work and really enjoyed riding it. Any changes I made for this trip only had to do with my interests that led me to plan some off-route options. I'm sure it was difficult for the BDR folks to arrive at a single offering since they had so much great riding to choose from. Anyway, huge thanks to all that contributed to publishing this path. I hope we can offer some detail about our experiences that will encourage more riders to enjoy this route themselves.

Over the Wisconsin winter I read a stack of books and searched around the web for places of interest in Idaho. I found a ton of great stuff and planned a mega-trip there to take much of it in.

Since his brother recently moved to Idaho, Doctor Zed was interested in joining the trip. Since he isn't yet retired like me, I needed to significantly pare down the trip to plan something that would fit into a two week window. This really cut down the miles and POIs. The good part of that is it gives me a reason to return to Idaho to check out the stuff I put aside for this trip.

Shortly before the trip, Druid heard about what I had planned and asked to ride along. Despite the short notice, he was able to get prepped and make the trip. Once we hit the road, I continued to make adjustments to what was planned to make sure we could comfortably complete the trip within the time available. This resulted in trimming a little more along the way which left the route and POIs that I'll share in the GPS file I post. The days were entertaining and the time flew by. A great trip!

Yes, one of the side trips off the IDBDR was to check out the dredge, some ghost towns, and the some other stuff. The picture of the mountain reflecting in the lake was taken at a stop along that side trip. Definitely worth the few hours it took. There is a lot of great stuff near the BDR route that is worth considering a visit.

    Yep, we rode the Lolo.
    That was a fun "road".
And that creek crossing was on an ATV trail that isn't on the regular IBDR.

That creek is part of the regular route. Lots of round rocks. I think I have some video of it when we get to that point. Seems like riders shift around a little on the rocks as they cross it. Personally, I chose to conservatively walk it across rather than risk tipping it into the stream in the middle of nowhere. Tenere air filter and all that.

    Oops, my bad.
And walking the bikes was probably a good idea.
