Thanks Apple Jam - I'm close enough I hope to ride at least portions of the route before our trip. Waaaaaaaaaay less pavement is what we want.

What can we expect for temperature lows that time of year.

Freezing is likely early most mornings, but probly just barely below freezing, and often perfect days in early October.

Nice - we were hoping to miss snow and be late enough to handle heat in S. Cal

    Cultus Mt.

I rode some of the South CDR and tried Cultus Mt. It turned into a real hill climb and I turned around. Does it go all the way to the top? Lots of hi speed gravel down there!

Yes, it is nasty bad road fun all the way to the top!! And the view is totally worth it when you get there. However, be careful,...that road has broken at least one knee that I'm aware of.

@Apple Jam I finally rode the Barlow road. Epic. You were right; it's one of the best unpaved roads in the state.

I'm curious how Cultus Mt compares to the spur of 4610 that goes to Tumala Mt. I like that one, but it's got a few rocky sections that have turned around folks before.

I sure hope the Forest Service replaces the bridge on Barlow soon. Too bad that the run is split in two right now.

Yeah, the full run would be cool. I joined just south of the bridge and took it S / W

I called the Forest Service and they do not yet have funding to replace the Bridge on the Barlow.

Something about flying a friggin' 747 full of freeloaders to every golf course in America and Europe is chewing up the budget...............

I'm believing they will get to it. About what, four years ago or so, they replaced 2-bridges west of this one - so The Barlow is on their radar.

I am planning to ride the north end of this route today from Hood River and exit route to get gas at Government camp - then home to Portland via 26. I'm riding alone (unless I meet someone) which I don't like doing - Putting notice here in case my son needs to find me.

Ride report later tonight when I get home.

    thanks all.

    Hey Jeff,
How much of a span is needed for the bridge that is out?
I can't remember any long bridges on the Barlow.
Any way us ADV'ers building a bridge for bikes and 4 legged critters only?
That would help keep the dust down. :D:D
Sounds like a fun weekend work party.

Mountain bikerz do that stuff all the time...
All you'd need is a couple long poles and a few planks... shouldn't be hard for some resourceful riders.
Stage it in the woods and throw it up like a military opo. At night... it'll just be there in the morning!
Good practice for when the earthquake hits!

Anyone have any favorite camping spots between Detroit Lake and Hood River on the CDR?

BobcatSig and I did the whole road yesterday. The little wooden hiking/bicycle (dirtbike) bridge is a little sketch but the washout has gotten more sketch! We rode down and up the ravine.
Edit I walked it down and rode it up. Bobcat rode his 690 down and crashed it up. Nevertheless we made it across. Pics don't do the washout justice so I'm not bothering to post them
