Yes sir, a good seat and wind protection can transform a bike! Sportsters come with the thumb screw throttle lock but I seldom use it.

That said, I built this bike specifically to force me to slow down, take back roads and turn in more smiles than miles each day. The Scramster is actually darn comfortable for a sun up to sun down ride so long as you keep it under 55mph.

I'm starting a touring bike project this fall. It'll be a chopper designed specifically for escape velocity, gtfo of Florida rides for when I need to be several states away on a day ride. :ricky

    Thanks for posting up!

Love the way you set up your bike man.
Good thread, very much in the spirit of Then Came Bronson...

Just started reading your ride report, one word... Awesome.
Was down at the bike shop drooling over the two Sportsters sitting on the showroom floor, dreaming of all the great adventures one could have, that was 46 years ago, had to use a calculator to figure out the math on that... because... well... I'm dumber than a stick... anyway, I was just a kid then, with big dreams, still remember it clear as day though.
Always loved the Sportsters, you've done a super job with your Sporty, very cool bike, and a very cool Dad, riding from Alaska to Florida on a Sportster... how cool is that... :thumb
Thanks for sharing a wonderful RR, and for bringing back some long lost memories.
Take care there young fella... you have a loving wife and family, lots of talent in more things than you can shake a stick at, follow your dreams and you'll be just fine... :thumb

    Yeah buddy!
. Diggin your ride and your RIDE...
My neighbor has a sportster that has been sitting in his shop, unused for a few years now and i have been eyeballing it just for THIS type of build, mostly to confuse all the hard core, classic harley-types in this neck of the woods who would find it appalling...

If you find yourself out near pickwick lake in southwest tennessee, you got a place to stay and a cold beer in exchange for me pouring over your bike for ideas...:hmmmmm

Thank you very much for reading along and for the encouragement! My dad is tough and adventurous but what has made him the "cool guy" in my world has been his lessons of humility and kindness. That I now get to travel upon the very bike that he did his longest moto trip aboard is something that a life changing experience in itself. Something I need to consider as I go forward.

    Cheers,

    Dave

    And onward we go...

The next few days would be a whirlwind of family activities. Everything from trips to downtown Asheville to dayhikes and even a short ride north on the BRP with my wife.

One thing that means quite a lot to me is seeing my mom happy and out living life. She recently retired from a job that she dedicated way too much of her life to. A couple of years back we almost lost her because of it. The body and the mind can only be sedentary for so long before it begins to comply with the ultimate goals of a life unlived. In essence, it quits. Luckily my mom pulled through her heart attack and began to work less and play more. Seeing her out playing fills me with a joy that I'm hard pressed to find words for so I'll leave it at that. Joy.

    Tourists...

We found a nice trail off of the BRP and took a short hike.

Maybe some small stuff the rest of this year...... I've got that "work" thing that's becoming an obstacle to big trips.....
But next year....... Got something big on my mind........

    Thanks DG!

That work thing sure does like to get in the way of living! I'll be keeping an eye out for that big trip report!

The wildlife in this region of NC is extremely abundant, making it's appearance known everywhere you go.

Bird bath? Hmmm... Tight squeeze! IMG_4065.jpg

We headed into Downtown Asheville for a day of "touristing". This pick was taken just before we melted...
    IMG_0043.jpg

The next day Sarah and I were able to sneak away for some much needed bonding. Life's stresses have been weighing on us and we really needed to reconnect. The weather didn't want to cooperate for a ride up to Mt Mitchell but we still enjoyed a ride along the BRP.
    IMG_20180621_134455.jpg

We ended the ride in downtown Weaverville with some good coffee, great food at an Italian joint and by making some new friends over a couple of drinks.

That evening my step daughter decided that I needed to teach her how to hustle. With the amount of money I made doing this back in highschool, maybe it can help her pay for college. I wasted my earnings on cheap liquor and skateboards.

I was really enjoying the "vacation" aspect of this trip. I never go on vacations where I'm not doing or planning. It was great to wake in the morning, commune with nature and my loved ones and then toss a coin for the day's activities.

There's so much cohabitation of humans and the natural world here that your never far from being immersed in the smells, sights and sounds of the real world... That one removed from life's daily grind.
