I was going to put some material up earlier but there have been two outstanding, blockbuster ride reports from 2009 through Central Asia from Timolgra and Sambor already ... so I refer you to them for full ride reports:

What follows in this thread of mine then are just photos, and a comment about each photo.

This thread follows the Sibirsky Extreme starter thread through Eastern Europe and the Caucasus - http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=463661

    So lets get into it.

First up ... crossing the Volga River Delta via floating bridge, near the Caspian Sea, just before entering Kazakhstan:

My welcoming party to Kazakhstan was not as attractive as other welcoming parties I have seen in my travels:

But at least the Kazakh boys thought my bike was pretty cool!

I soon realised in Kazakhstan, I was going to have to adjust my concept of what was attractive.

By the second day, this old girl was quite a pleasant sight.

I met a guy, Alyosha, who was an enduro champion back in the Soviet days.

Hello Mr. Colepatch, I just wanted to butt in here a moment to say you do have some nice adventures and go to some very interesting places taking pictures along the way. Thanks for it and now a reason to get myself back on a bike. I used to ride enduro type stuff all the time and haven't ridden for awhile... now to convince the wife I need a new (to me )ride. Nice work with your documentation and everything and thanks for doing it.

while at Alyosha's, in a quiet desert town called Beyneu, two Russian bikers turned up .., Mad Max and Andrei.

Alyosha was 51 but he still had plenty of life in him, despite not riding much these days. He ran a cafe / roadstop kinda place just on the dusty edges of Beyneu with his girlfriend Shura. Shura was 21 and wanted to get married. Alyosha said he wouldn't marry her. And kept reminding her if she gets too fat, he will send her back to Uzbekistan and get a new girlfriend. (Beyneu is in much wealthier Kazakhstan but within 100 km of the poor Uzbek border).

If there was one thing to say about Shura, she cooked the best Plov I have ever eaten. Plov is a central asian dish ... basically the central asian version of fried rice. Its usually got a lot of spices, garlic and lamb in it. At least it does when its a good plov.

Andrei, Mad Max and I headed South East towards the Uzbek border. We had struck up a friendship while at Alyoshas place and since we were all riding to Uzbekistan, decided to ride together for a week.

We passed the old rail yards at Beyneu on our way out of town:

85 km from Beyneu along a dusty gravel road was the Uzbek border. Once through, we stopped at a place Max had stopped at before, a chaikhana run by a nice Korean lady.

A Chaikhana is an Uzbek tea-house. They typically serve food, tea in a nice relaxing environment and are a great part of touring across Uzbekistan.

And Koreans? They are all over Uzbekistan too. Stalin moved the ethnic Koreans that lived near the Korean border to central asia (mainly Uzbekistan) to avoid them having any "conflicts of interest" between USSR and Korea.
