We also changed money while there. There are about 2500 Uzbek Sum per Euro. And 1000 Sum is the largest note. That means the largest piece of Uzbek paper you can get is worth 40 EUR cents.

I changed 200 EUR and received 500 bank notes x 1000 Sum - thank god it was all 1000 sum notes. if it had been 500, 200 or 100 Sum notes i would have needed an extra pannier on the bike.

Andrei here in the foto has just changed 20 USD.

We had ridden 300 km along a plateau that had a total variation in height of about 50 metres in 300 km, then in the space of half a kilometre, it drops 100 - 150 metres. In many areas it drops like a cliff. This was the edge of the Ustyurt Plateau.

Here an altitude profile of crossing the Ustyurt:

kara meaning black and kalpak meaning hat ... the Karakalpaks are a separate nationality within Uzbekistan. Far more Asiatic than the typical Uzbek (Karakalpaks are ethnically closer to Kyrgyz and Kazakhs), the Karakalpaks (black hats) live on the shores of what was once the Aral sea.

Here an old Karakalpak gent had just given us directions to the former fishing port in Muynak.

Smiling for the camera. Thanks to the collapse of their traditional fishing industry based on the Aral Sea, the Karakalpaks are now among the poorest people in Central Asia:

These ships used to fish the Aral Sea. For centuries the fish of The Aral Sea were the lifeblood of the Karakalpak people and their economy. Now they have nothing.

The sea now is over 100 km away, shrivelled up and too salty to support any life.

A Islamic cemetary between Kungrad and Nukus. Note the soviet star in the foreground and the ancient mud hill fort in the background.
