Since the tow day and two up klr ride home from Savanah, Ive been staying pretty close to home.
    Ok maybe not that close.
Im fortunate enough to have a first class riding buddy less than 20 miles from home. we both adhere to the same loose guidelines while out slinging gravel and abusing the mechanical features of a motorcyle, and we both have the freedom to cut out of work on short notice for a ride, be it 2 hours or 10.
Lately as I said I've been staynig fairly close to home. which isnt all bad as some of you already know.
So last Wednesday it was a Mackinaw River Run staying in the Mackinaw valley for 200 miles of gravel, twisty back roads and condemned bridges.

nice cabin on the Mackinaw. bridge is closed to through traffic :lol3 whatever

Not much riding last weekend but made up for it Tuesday afternoon. I called drymike to see if he could duck out by 3:00 then realized all of my project were on track and if he could make it we'd be on the road by 1:30, precious daylight this time of year.
So off we went through the sand trails of Sandridge State Forest.

over the hills and through the dales to the wetlands of Quiver Creek Region
    [IMG]
the bridge has only a few years left. It took us through some wooded trails and into a farmers backyard. He didnt seem to mind as we passed through
    [IMG]

We were hoping to make it to the Spoon River Valley so we had to hit the main road to make some time

Gee P. Ess says home is SE 5589 miles. :huh
    whoops wrong hemisphere
Mike gave coords for this place and I punched in S rather than N. :D
    Big difference :lol3

A shot from over the shoulder of drymike while towing the crusty I mean Trusty Dakar on tour through the beautiful Mississippi Palisades area. Great mpg :evil

Some where I have a pic of the aftermath of this attempted crossing
showing the Dakar crammed up into the rail :cry

Dont look down. I know, but whats the first thing I did :nod
The eyes truly have it. I looked down and got myself into a nice mess. Grabbed a handful of throttle on the way down and luckily bounced into the side rail avoiding a spill in the drink.

Thanks for giving some diversity to this otherwise dirt ridden thread

hey fist got any of those pics motojoe and I worked so hard for at the Spring Ride?

Dragoon you carry yourself over here any time.

found the picture of the Bridge incident

By hitting the rail under power I managed to jamb the handlebar and fairing under the diagonal support. It was a real treat to pull out

The days grew shorter the time had come
Native were restless and banging their drum
Gear was all loaded and my chores were all done
    Well almost
An afternoon meeting was all that remained
Between me and my comrades and our hunting refrain
I left for camp well after dark
    [IMG]
And took the long way through the Sand Park
    [IMG]
    I packed quite precisely
    For this trip you see
    Gotten away without a hitch
    [IMG]
Guinness stowed safely away in my stitch
Cross the river on the old windy road
    [IMG]
Down through the hollers it’s an unwritten code
I pulled into deer camp all was in order
It looked like a Russian Outpost on the Chechnyan Border
    [IMG]
The troops all kicked back and fully aware
Cold beer and firearms stowed close to their chairs
The doe deer was hanging by her feet from a tree
First kill of the weekend won the whiskey
    [IMG]
I had missed killing Friday but didn’t care
My interest was not in hunting but just being there
In camp with the troops who for years now had been
A part of my life and the overall plan
These guys are my brothers and over the years
We’ve been through the thick and spun all the gears
The night was filled with whiskey and lies
Poured from a bottle beneath a moonless sky
The trails soon were calling so off we did ride
Down through the woods along the creek side
I was the pilot of this four-wheeled machine
Blasting through mud, creeks and ravines
My passenger, a hunter all grizzly and mean
Was laughing and giggling like a girl of thirteen
    [IMG]
Now back to camp to test the hardware
All of the guns we’d need to compare
    [IMG]
Into the hours we joked and we laughed
About riding and hunting and girls of our past
The morning grew close so I chose to retire
Leaving companions in charge of the fire
Guard it they did till just before light
When they rallied the dayshift that slept through the night
    Breakfast prepared without a hitch
Sausage and eggs from the faithful camp bitch
Coffee and feeding came to an end
We left our warm camp to go hunting again
Out in the woods us men and our guns
Not hunting for need only for fun
Our quarry the deer, Id shoot one perhaps
If it wandered by between morning naps
I was up in a tree not long before light
And asleep within minutes of smiting my light
Awakened by noises I heard from quite near
The sound of the footsteps of a white tailed deer
Should I shoot or pass I thought to myself
What a mess that would cause and Id surely need help
To drag it and gut it haul it and skin it dress it and pack and package and freeze
The thought of all this put me to sleep
I climbed down from the tree as the North wind did blow
And sat by a stump to wait for a doe
She arrived none to quick and I started to dream
    [IMG]
About gravel and twisties on bard my machine
The deer weren’t moving at the4 Farm in the woods
But a ride on the gravel would do the mind good
So that was the call I had only to decide
What kind of roads I wanted to ride
Start first with Round Barn then out to the flats
Down through the cattle and circle back
    [IMG]
Gas in Ipava then back on my track
Head back to the camp for farm bunny stew
The roads were quite muddy it was all I could do
Keep taking these pictures to show them to you
I wolfed down a bowel then two and then three
Ate like a convict who’d just been released
Said my farewells to my brothers and friends
I had miles to ride before seasons end
    [IMG]
I wandered down roads some with no name
Low or no maintenance their only acclaim
Out on the levees of old Thompson Lake
I saw the big buck whos picture I’d take
    [IMG]
    (look close i was moving)
Then side and then wobble then slide and then fall
    It happened so fast
And back I did crawl to the trusty Dakar my carry all
Back on two wheels and on down the levee
Glad to be ridding and not in the Chevy
I saw this pump house decrepit and old, windows were missing and so were the doors
A building for certain I must explore
    [IMG]
Then on to the sand roads and back to the hood
I had ridden all day and done my mind good
    [IMG]
My body was sore from the afternoon fall
The fork seals had failed but really that’s all
    [IMG]
The weekend was great, filled with family and friends
What more can I ask for before my time ends
