Tested this recently and so far i really like it. Its the best of both worlds (smart phone and dedicated nav).

    www.city-gs.com/blog/2020/1/25/modern-dedicated-nav-solution

    • 5” Resistive Touch Screen (meaning use any gloves not just special gloves
    • Charges through metal contacts on a charging cradle (no usb charging etc)
    • Waterproof (haven’t tested thoroughly but i did hose my bike down including the nav without issue)
    • Runs android 6.0 meaning it will runs most apps you care about
    • Runs waze and google maps and guru maps and music apps etc
    • Has Bluetooth WiFi and GPS built in (no SIM card slot). Guru maps works offline
    • I tether to my iPhone for data when i need it (like waze) works really easily.

Is there a “quick release” way to remove the unit from the bike without having to unplug a power cord?

The lower picture is the back of the cradle, the release for the GPS is the tab on the right side (the top when mounted on a moto).

The GPS has a series of gold “dots” on the back of it that engage with pins in the cradle. So no plug used. Pushing tab to release unit from cradle releases it from power also.

Looks like a great solution! Do you have a link to where you bought it from? I’ve been very happy with the Kyocera DFP, but sometimes I’ve wondered if I should tuck it away and have another source, using the DFP as my backup. I just like to keep things as simple as possible, and pack light.

Ah..... The only link I saw (and clicked on) was a link to download Alibaba's apps. I don't want a damn app. Was viewing this from a tablet, changed to my computer and the product link worked. :)

Nice to see the glove friendly Resistive screen, that is my biggest hardware bitch with cellphones/tablets.

I kind of doubt it, but does it also have a transreflective screen, that's visible in direct/bright sunlight?
That would fix my #2 bitch.

Like the others said, it pops out with a quick release. It also has a screw in the back that locks it in so it doesnt pop out by mistake. Its a simple twist screw. I’d personally like to find a security version of that screw that requires a specific bit to get out. I’ll update here if i find one.

I hope thats true. I did see you mention in your blog that you found the screen on your garmin/bmw nav not bright enough.

I love the screen on my Montana, full bright sun and its very visible with zero back lighting (transflective). Under most other conditions running full backlighting it is very bright, more so than any other gps, phone or tablet I have tried.

I’ll report back after next ride, but the brightness felt similar to the Montana. It doesn’t have that zero brightness feature though.

you gotta be careful. The ebay FOD sports one doesn’t have a resistive touch screen. That’s key. Use the link in my post.

I haven’t tried those apps but the play store should show what the minimum OS version is for those apps. It handled waze and guru well and i imagine waze is quite resource intensive.

The FODSPORTS one is NOT the one to get.
It does NOT have a resistive touch screen.

This is the one with a resistive touch screen:

o great! just wanted to make sure :)
the resistive screen is a big part of what makes this an attractive device.
