Road to north-east edge of Eurasia by alex_onroad
Good afternoon. My name is Alexander and I want to talk about preparations for a long road to the very edge of Eurasia, Chukotka. And then, if everything ends well, I’ll tell you about the road itself.) But, first things first ...
Three years ago I set a goal for myself - to earn money and go on a trip around the world. Sometimes losing guidance and motivation, straying from the path, I nevertheless approached the intended. This fall, the start of the world tour was planned ...
But something went wrong.) Actively watching the moto-circumnavigators for myself realized that I had mixed up the goals. I don’t want to get involved with endless visa obtaining, customs clearance, other paperwork that will inevitably haunt you in this travel format. I want to go. Long ride. Preferably to the North. Ideal - to where no motorcycle has yet passed before me. And the right route was found - Chukotka!
This is the most extreme point of our continent, the edge of our land. A minimum of civilization and roads, a harsh climate, no one has previously traveled on a motorcycle (as far as I know) - what could be the best challenge for a young man craving adventure?)
Initially preparing for a circumnavigation, he began to choose a motorcycle. The last 4 years he went on Transalpe 650 and is grateful to this motorcycle. The most reliable motorcycle (with the exception of the YBR 125.)) For about 100 thousand kilometers Alpa has never failed and has not been left in the wilderness. But the new route makes other demands, and the Alps are not eternal. We need a new motorcycle, more designed for off road, but with the ability to overcome long distances to the start of the off-road part of the journey.
Many options have been revised. The main criteria when choosing a motorcycle:
1. Fresh year, from 2010. Tired of old motorcycles.
2. Weight. For a comfortable ride on off-road motorcycle should be as light as possible. Preferably ± 150 kg.
3. Simplicity and maintainability. A minimum of electronics and modern stuff.
4. Price. The budget is around $ 5000.
5. Height. On a seat above 880 mm I feel not very.
Honda XR is high for me, and I didn’t want to take a motorcycle in years with high mileage. BMW X650 is extremely difficult to find, and age will also be 10+ years. KTM and Husky are too fashionable / expensive.) Tenere, KLR, GS are not that class.
The finalists were Suzuki DRZ400 and DR650. But in DRZ-ke did not suit the service interval and more technological (= less durable engine).
Total: Suzuki DR 650 SE.
Still produced, you can find the freshest years. The dry weight of 147 kg is super! The motorcycle design has not changed since the 1990s, simple and reliable. No bells and whistles, simple and reliable, like an ax.) In the United States, auctions can be found for very reasonable money. And in height what you need.)
A month of monitoring American auctions and ... the right moto found! 2017, after a small drop (no muzzle, fork and frame whole) for $ 1,700 - perfect! Two months drive to Minsk and a motorcycle comes to me. It was love at first sight.))
One trouble was revealed: the motorcycle was without an ignition switch. Most likely, he was stolen. But this did not spoil the joy of the first meeting. While rolling the motorcycle into the garage, there was full confidence that with it all plans would be realized.)
Then there were 2 months of recovery and refinement of the motorcycle. The restoration was necessary:
1. Put the ignition switch.
2. Find lateral plastic, marshland and face.
3. Put the headlight.
4. Bent handles, broken turn signals, mirrors, etc.
The list seems to be small, but nothing came of it for nothing. The castle comes - and it is from the old year with a different scheme of work. I have to trick. Muzzle - again from the wrong year and does not stand on the mount. Lateral plastic - not in nature, only on ebay for $ 200 (!!!) for two unfortunate side panels. But everything was restored.
It's time to finalize the motorcycle for their own purposes. According to the work plan was:
1. Engine protection.
Ready-made protection costs about $ 150, it was decided to do it yourself, in order to send the saved money to other purposes. They took a sample of protection, bought a sheet of aluminum and went in for drawing and cutting.)
As a result, it turned out not as beautiful as the factory one, but much cheaper. And he will protect, I think, no worse.)
2. Frames for bags.
3. Fastenings for canisters on 10 l on each side.
Here the help of third-party specialists was needed.) I gave the motorcycle to familiar guys. It turned out like this.)
4. Tank 25l instead of the regular 13l.
Long torment. I tried in every possible way to avoid buying a tank, but did not come up with an adequate solution. I really wanted to, because in the end it cost almost $ 500. And this taking into account the fact that it was possible to catch a discount of -100 $ on ebay. A hole in the budget, but there's nothing to be done.)
5. Heated pens.
Everything is simple. The main thing is to find $ 70 for their purchase and a bit of soldering work to set everything up nicely.)
6. Installation of the light switch (always forced on in the factory).
The always-on light is annoying, with off-road driving it is not needed at all. Therefore, I decided to make a switch.
7. Protection of handles (guards).
8. USB socket.
At the end of the work, the motorcycle began to look like this:
To be continued...
Again today, I looked over your report . This time I opened the map photo, impressive distance! This will be a great trip to follow, best of luck to you on your adventure!
Wishing you the best of luck, but not much for roads or trails east of Magadan.
Guessing ship your bike to Pevek and the ride to the Kolyma river and then a boat up river to where the road to Magadan cross's it?
Hi, Alex! Great idea! Can I learn more about the route and time of the trip?
