I haven't ridden much on dirt and as a new DR owner, want to do a lot more. But I need to practice. Time is short at the moment so I'm keen to find some roads that aren't too far away from home (Bowen Hills). I've been out to Dayboro and out Boonah way but looking for somewhere that doesn't take quite as long to get there. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Goat Track from Highvale up to between Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious. One way up towards the top. Old school Rd off of Clear mountain Rd. It is short in length but dirt.
Neither probably great roads to practice dirt road riding on though.

Cheers! I've ridden the Goat Track a few times, forgot about that one. The one at Clear Mountain is probably marginally closer, will give it a go.

    Not for about 35 years!

Jinker Track was the last dirt road around here, and Gap Creek Rd.

I have some pictures that resemble that comment.

I'd definitely recommend riding around that glasshouse area. Doesn't take long to rip up the highway to get there.

Good variety of dirt with a bit of sand around too.

just go to glasshouse and ride around anything that looks like a foresty track.. the powerlines go north south and beerburum woodford rd goes east west so you cant get lost.

Think you might be lucky and find a few K's of dirt still, down Pinkenba / Nudgee Beach way.

I know you haven't asked this, and may not apply in your circumstances. But for other first time dirt / m/cycle riders in general.
Practice on dirt is one thing and ultimately what your seeking.
Improving your off (dirt) road riding, the following practices will help tremendously,

    - The difference in bike control / feel once Standing, And between front / rear weighting, by moving your body pos'n.
*Read up on the following - Neutral Standing Pos'n, Weighting front suspension (tyre), rear suspension.
    - Clutch control. Braking control...particularly front brake.
    - Slow speed balance, Standing and sitting.
    - Continually practice a 'Figure 8' at slowest speed, tightest steering lock you can manage. Both Standing and sitting.
Using only rear brake, then only front brake. Obv Clutch control is central to this routine.

GL...oh and don't assume the roads up GHouse way are always unoccupied.
So Watch out for those damn cars. A few of the Rally Car boys play there too.

Thanks for that. I'll have a look on google maps, to see what I can find.

That stuff definitely does apply to me, I've been reading up a bit already. Planning to get some coaching soon as well, I figure it can only help me ride faster and more safely. It feels a lot like learning to ride on the road all over again, but I'm enjoying the challenge.

Yeah I have heard that it can get a bit hectic up Glasshouse way, especially on weekends. Since my original post I've had some good rides around Dayboro (Lacey's Creek Road and Range Road) and Mt Mee (Lovedays Road), might stick with that neck of the woods.

Mt Mee is good, make sure you know where you are going, there are some tracks in there that may catch you out.

Also, watch out for the P plate car drivers - whilst I’m all for the young guys being out in the bush rather in front of a screen, they can be a little erratic and excitable when driving in groups.

If mid-week is an option, make the most of it.

Once you broaden your horizons a little, then numerous rides up and down Eastern and Western Branch Rds from Linville are excellent dirt ride learning roads generally with not too much traffic.

This thread needs more pictures. +1 Cruz.
This photo was taken on the Kilcoy / Murgon Road towards the northern end and is only meant to give some idea of the type of roads in the area.

I saw a promising road on the other side of Mt Glorious yesterday, but had barely gotten started when I got to this gate.
