I've got time and a motorcycle on hand. So let's give this a shot...again...

Riding from Maryland to California - winter edition

Steed - Ducati 748S. Undoubtedly, the best touring bike of all time:

    Tips and suggestions are welcome.

Just need to check the valves and slap on new tires. Then I'm on the road.

Originally I was going to start from Maryland but the entire Blue Ridge Parkway is closed leading me to think the ride down will blow. So have booked an auto train ticket from Lorton, Virginia to Sanford, Florida. Will start from there!

Let me suggest Mich.PR 5's for tires.
Heated Jacket (or vest) & heated gloves...
    Enjoy the ride.

Probably a good idea. Bring plenty of warm clothes. The mornings are cool here in Fla. (upper 40s-low 50s) this time of year and will get colder as you head west. Heated gloves and jacket would be good to have. Be safe and enjoy.

In Eastern Arizona, temps are from the 30s up. Winds are the killer.

    Keep the rubber side down!

Pulled the trigger on Pirelli Angel STs. I'll probably need new tires if I ride back anyway :D

Beats the weather we're facing up here. I've got heated grips, winter gloves, and the works.

Geez I thought AZ would be in the steady 50s haha

I had an 06 749s. If yours puts out the heat mine did, you will need temps in the 50's or below, or a dedicated nut cooler. Good luck with the trip.

I always liked those bikes. I used my 996 as a daily for a couple of years. I must say, you are a better man than I. I can feel the cramps now.....ahhhh. my legs and hips just kill me thinking about it. but hey, beats the shit out of sitting on the couch! good luck

I wish I was coming with you. I hate winter but can't do anything about it for next five years.

Yep, would have been my second choice.
I have used both on my Paso. Only difference for me, PR's felt better in the wet with slightly better wear.

Oh, one other thing. Don't forget to take pictures! :thumb

LOL dedicated nut cooler. That gave me a laugh, truth!

It's a tempermental bike but amazing in its element (aka the twisties)

You've got two weeks to change that around!

Michelin PRs are definitely the best sport touring tire I've had as well. But its price makes me wince

    Will definitely take pictures!

And then in 2020/21 you could ride all the way around..towards the West coast again, up to Alaska, to Tuk, across Canada to Labrador, on to Newfoundland, and make your way back to MD.

Are you planning on enjoying Florida back roads or are you going to blast through the state on the major highways?

    Route

Here's a faster route that will take you through a couple of neat FL towns while avoiding metro areas and superslab. Drops you on 98 along the Gulf Coast which is a nice way to travel through the panhandle. I'm one of those oddballs that loves riding in FL so take it for what it's worth. :lol3

So I've seen that it's customary to do an epic write up on each of these trips. However, videos are a different dynamic to explore and I'm going to do a series on this for fun - pre trip, during the trip, and post trip.

Write-ups are definitely in order though and my forte'

Pardon the obvious. Sharing vids with others as well

Bike is good to go. Heading to Florida via train late tomorrow afternoon. A little nervous, yet hella excited to do this.

High in MD is in the 30s tomorrow...going to be a pleasant 60 mile ride to the station
