I’m at Mountain Home, Idaho tenting it and will be camping again at Steptoe Butte tomorrow night. I want to catch the sunrise as it hits the Palouse. Hope the two of you are enjoying 3 Step...

I don’t have any WiFi again this evening but took this with the iPhone. This is how I ended the day, enjoying a Red Hook IPA as the sun was setting in Mountain Home, ID...

Well I am a little late to this party, but in now. Good start, and the average speed for the first leg is? FAST.

Your in ‘my’ country now. It’s great to read RR’s from places you’ve lived and visited. It gives you other people’s perspective. Wish I where with you brother! The Palous is unique and wonderful. Watch for deer!!!!!!!!!

    ~ 8 May 2019 (Day 2)

I've always used US-101 along the coast and the I-5 to go north so I thought I'd see what Old US-395 had to offer and I found a few nuggets along the way...
    Day 2.jpg

I didn't set an alarm on purpose and I just let my body wake itself... that was at 4:30 am. I decided to get packing and beat that heat before the sun rose and the rest of the campers got up. I think I was one of the first to get out of Panamint Springs...
    2.jpg

I've never been this far west of CA-190 and it was a blast with long sweepers getting over the hills...
    3.jpg

when I made it over the last remnants of Death Valley, I had a great view of the snow capped Eastern Sierras...

I've been wanting to place my sticker at Gus' Beef Jerky...
    5.jpg

    get err' done...
    6.jpg

after leaving Olancha, I stopped off at McD's for some breakfast and bum off their wifi to get a few updates in Lone Pine... then it was off to the Alabama Hills. I didn't want to get too deep off-road since I had 80/20s on the GSA, I could feel the front tire give in some of the turns...
    7.jpg

I didn't know it but a lot of movies were shot in the Alabama Hills; Iron Man, Gladiator, Tremors, Django, Superman....and a whole slew of others...

After the Alabama Hills, I made my way north on US-395 and that ride is simple awesome. You have the Eastern Sierras staring you "in your face close" with it's snow capped peaks, it almost reminds me of my ride to Alaska. There are signs along the route and I saw the sign for Mazanar so I thought I'd check it out...
    9.jpg

turns out it was used as the Internment Camps for Japanese Americans during WWII. Most of the buildings are gone and only a few are left standing. Manzanar is HUGE, I took the driving route around the camp and it's organized into blocks for housing, services, mess hall, hospital, and military staff...
    10.jpg

Here's the Japanese cemetery set against the Eastern Sierras...

This is what you'll see during your ride up US-395...
    13.jpg

Here's another view... I happen to catch this as I was making a mirror check and saw this behind me... I pulled over (probably not smart) on the side of the highway and climbed a small hill to get this photo... There was simply too many gorgeous views to take photos of, I could have spent a whole day cataloging photos along 395 but instead I got selective on which ones to take...
    14.jpg

    Just WOW!
    15.jpg
This is Convict Lake... there was a sign for it (kinda' small) the only reason I saw it, I was looking at the airport and happen to see the sign for it as I passed by...

(Panoramic shots with the iPhone...) there small sidewalk with a barrier where I took this photo, I just sat there for a few minutes taking it all in... a gentleman came up to me that lives in the area and told me the colors would change all throughout the day depending on how the sun hits the background...

I saw these old buildings on the southern bound side of the 395 and I pulled a U'ey to get a closer look...
    19.jpg

    I like old dilapidated buildings...
    20.jpg

After Lee Vining, you start climbing up the hill and there is a viewpoint where I caught this shot of Mono Lake...
    17.jpg

    I was here sticker...
    18.jpg

After Mono Lake I continued north to Carson City so I could ride on US-50 - dubbed "The Loneliest Road in America"... once I got passed Carson City I hit a traffic jam ahead and it was a stand-still for 5 minutes... I saw several locals going off road to get around the traffic jam so "When in Rome"... it was a traffic accident and there a a life flight helicopter on deck... I was glad I went off-road this time. When I went to Key West I was stuck in a life flight involved accident and I was stuck for two hours... but after that I made it to the campgrounds by Lahontan Reservior...

    ~ 9 May 2019 (day 3)

The Motorcycle Gods were looking out for me today...

I wanted to ride US-50 all the way to Ely and camp at the KOA for the night but the weather was not cooperating so I had to change the route on the fly... but all turned out for the better as luck would have it...
    Day 3.jpg

I've seen this place on several ride reports and thought it was a good place to stop for gas before I get further east on US-50. They are known for the Middlegate Monster Burger and I would have loved to try it out but it was tooooo early in the morning for something that size.... it's a quirky place but a must see if you are on US-50...
    2.jpg

do you notice the storm clouds looking east???
    3.jpg

    gas was $4.00 per gallon...

just a couple of miles from Middlegate Station was the Shoetree... looks like it's been some time since a new pair were tossed up there...
    5.jpg

heading east on US-50 the clouds grew and grew worse... I could feel little sprinkle here and there and the wind started picking up as I headed east...
    6.jpg

I stopped at the Pony Express Cold Springs Station landmark just to see the marker and put my rain pants on fearing that I'd get caught in a downpour...
    9.jpg

damn how we've come a long way from then... now I can just pick up my iPhone and text or call Mrs. B8 without batting an eye... but back in the day the Pony Express was the "shizzle" for 10 days coast to coast...

    Intermission...

Life is PERFECT right now... only thing missing are Mrs. B8 and the kids... we have a Yorkie as well... maybe it’s the two IPAs talkin’ on a semi-empty stomach but such is life... I asked Mrs. B8 why am I being selfish taking this trip - spending all this money????... but RIGHT NOW you have that AH HA moment...

black 8 is at Clear Lake, WA enjoying a couple of IPAs, listening to some soft rock, camp fire goin’ against a sunset background... SIMPLY PERFECT at the moment if you’ve seen ending to The Last Samurai... tomorrow I’ll be grillin’ some steaks....

After I left Cold Springs Station, I made the command decision to head north after Austin, NV... I got caught in light sprinkles but nothing hard... the wind was still kicking it... there were supercells all over the place dumping water...
    12.jpg

Jill had me take NV-306 and again the supercells were there to my left and right... I would catch the edges and get some light sprinkles... it was boogie time to get "outta" there...
    8.jpg

at this point I was sayin' "The Motorcycle Gods are with me today..." cuz' my route went through the tiny sliver of clear skies missing the supercells dumping water as I made my way north...
    7.jpg

Jill then had me take NV-225 and it led me to this wonderfull place...

looking back down NV-225, I was leaving all those storm clouds behind...
    14.jpg

this gives you an indication that I'll be riding along the river on the canyon floor - mile after gorgeous mile of twists and turns...
    15.jpg

    16.jpg

totally unexpected and 180 degree flip from the supercells...

actually this was a perfect way to end the day... my camp fee was only $8.00 and and there was a gas station nearby where I bought a couple of Red Hook IPAs that I enjoyed as the sun was going down...

Updates should be more regular since I'm at Clear Lake with their WiFi instead of bumming off McD's all the time...
