    ~ 10 May 2019 (Day 4)

    God's County...

eversince I learned of the Old Spiral Highway, I have wanted to ride it... today I'll get that chance...
    1 Day 4.jpg

OK... let me tell you about Jimmy...

I woke up early because I was going to the Old Spiral Highway today and got my routine going. While I was packing this old crusty dude comes up to me and tells me "time to get outta here, tooo many fucken' bikers" in a joking manner. I didn't pay any attention to him and just nodded my head... So as I'm packing I see Jimmy walk to the edge of his concrete pad and adjust himself and I'm thinkin' to myself "don't even tell me he's gonna..." just as I thought it, he just let's it hang out and does his business... I'm like "what the hell..." not once but twice as he's packing up. So time goes by and he comes up to me again and asks where I'm headed and I say no place in particular and I ask him where he's headed... Alaska he says, he's headed up to Bellingham to take the ferry and he'll be on the road for 3 months... DAMN I thought and he starts walking away to pack again and I see he's wearing a retired Marine Corps logo on the back of his jacket... turns out he's a crusty old Vietnam Leatherneck that served in Dong Ha from '67-68. I later walked up to him when I finished packing to say hello as a fellow Marine. He proceeds to tell me about one night when he was laying on his cot and he hears incoming so he starts counting flash-to-bang while he's in his cot... he does a combat roll on the deck and starts low crawling to the sand bags when he hears three more incoming... all the while he's thinking "this is it Jimmy..." After it was all said and done, a piece of shrapnel had gone through his cot and it would certainly been it for Jimmy had he not done that combat roll off his cot... He later looked for that piece of shrapnel and it's hanging off the highway pegs on his bike in the photo... Lesson learned - Never judge a book by it's cover! I had a challenge coin with me and I gave it to Jimmy and thanked him for his service and we ended up hugging it out as fellow Leathernecks... I wished him safe travels and I went on my way...
    1.jpg

leaving Mountain Home, ID... I'm greeted with this view and the spring cool air... this is what I call motorcycle therapy at it's best, wide open country and I have the road all to myself...

    2.jpg

my next destination was Idaho City as recommended by @Zubb... riding on ID-22 was a dead gorgeous ride up the mountains... I'd be riding along lakes and rivers practically the whole day...

I'm riding along and turn the corner to something like this... I'm thinking it's "God's Country" with these rolling hills and rivers...

I loved walking around Idaho City for it's old western charm "Once a rip-roaring mining camp, in the 1860's, Idaho City was the center of one of the richest gold strikes in North America."
    8.jpg

I met Goerge and his wife Marilyn while setting up their store when I took this photo... come to find out that George served in the Coast Guard and we struck a conversation for a bit... he knew of the Hotel Del Coronado, The US Grant Hotel, and Kansas City BBQ in downtown San Diego... I asked if I could take a photo of them and he said yes... but he asked that I not show his face on the web... so I blocked it out...
    9.jpg

leaving Idaho City I saw a sign that pointed to Horshoe Bend, ID so I took it to cut across without having to backtrack down ID-21... it was paved maybe for the first couple of miles then turned into a gravel road up over the mountains and down the backside that led to ID-55...

riding on ID-55 there was a bit more vehicle traffic but the views were awesome nonetheless... at this point I'm asking myself "when am I NOT riding along a river or lake???"

High marks for your camera work, well done.
Rudy, I may be too late to ask this, but if you are anywhere near Mt. Baker / Bellingham, I owe you a meal. I am north of Lynden, Wa. and can rip down that way to meet. You are sure having a nice trip. If you come to my place, you can sleep in the RV.

    ~ 11-12 May 2019 (Day 5-6)

    Clear Lake Campgrounds...

I arrived at Clear Lake and checked in with Judy, she had set me up at the last spot at the end of the lake... prime location for Clear Lake...

this was the first night at the lake...
    1.jpg

I just hung out and relaxed with a couple of IPAs recovering from the past few days of riding...
    2.jpg

on 12 May I accessed the clubhouse's WiFi and updated my posts to get caught up... it took me pretty much the morning and into the afternoon...

this was the evening of the 12th after I had made a run at the nearby Safeway for a couple of steaks, a potato, and more IPAs...
