Here is some more teaser shots from yesterday. Got a good ride in with friends. Corkscrew to California to Engineer. Lunch at Southern Vittles in Lake City. Over Wager Gulch to Stony Pass, back to Silverton and beautiful curvy slab on 550 back to Ouray. We had a 790 and an 890 along. They did fine, but there is some more technical riding involved on the Wager Gulch ATV trail as well as some pretty loose climbs on parts of Stony.

Whitmore Falls. Worth the short hike down to see it. East side of Engineer.

Pole Creek. Wide, but not too deep.

When he suggests rain gear, he means it. On probably 100% of my August/Sept trips to the Rockies, we get at least a bit of rain in the afternoon. Sometimes it can be a downpour depending on where you are. For that reason, I always try to plan my gnarliest trail sections before that, so we're not contending with weather in addition to the tougher terrain. For the most part, the roads won't be too impacted by the daily light rain. But trails will become muddy and wet rocks are slippery rocks.

Camping at 9,000', I wouldn't be surprised to see the temps drop into the 30s. Everyone better have a warm sleeping bag.

Sounds like stay warm and dry is the name of the game, with the ability to remove layers.

Does anyone have interesting route suggestions for those coming from Denver area? With Hwy 50 closed I was trying to find a way to cut from 149 to Owl Creek Pass. Is there anything back there or would it be wiser to just go all the way to Lake City and take the Alpine Loop over to 550? And how long would that take roughly just going one way from LC to Ouray?

    thanks!

Thanks for the link! Looks like we’ll just need to schedule appropriately to get thru.

You and everyone else trying to get through at the same time, lol.... if you can find an alternate route that may be faster.

Any word on the scheduled closure of 550 between Ouray and Silverton? I think the Colorado Dept of Trans put off the closure until after Labor Day which might effect riders' plans.

I’ve been following this thread because I live in the area. The weather is going to change Wednesday and get 10-15F cooler than it has been so you might wanna be ready for that. Rain and snow is expected. Looks like the hot weather is going to be over. With it having already snowed in places, it could get pretty sketchy with the big temp drop.

The last update had the closure starting just after West Fest. Which is good. I was hoping 50 would have stayed open as well, but looks like either follow the closure schedule, or route around. Hwy 92 to Crawford or Paonia is a fun curvy road, or just come from further south and up 550, or from north and drop down. Those on adventure bikes can just have an adventure and take Cinnamon or Engineer on the way over.

20210829_083701.jpg That was Sunday morning, east side of Cinnamon pass.
Raining pretty good all day today. Still 60ish up above 8000.
