So its near time for our annual oyster and fish fry fund raiser for our VFD. Set aside Sunday, February 23 from 11am to 1pm. Tickets are $30 at the door. (Its a good cause!)

Location is The Columbus Hall (formerly, the KC Hall), Exit 693 IH-10.

Of course, I don't recommend the slab... a million county roads to choose from...

... and, as noted in the photos, the weather is (almost) always perfect.

The more adventurous will come to Columbus on Saturday morning to view the parade from the Court House Square. Then eat BBQ and attend the FFA Auction. Ya'll need a new calf!

But it ain't all pretty girls, fast horses or big red fire trucks in parades...

Dat's me on the nozzle making the initial attack. A second pumper was catching a hydrant a block away, then laying a large diameter hose to us. A second crew is packing out just off camera to head upstairs after a quick knockdown.

A strong north wind pushed the heat to the house. The ramp singed just as we got a hose line charged.

Our third call of today was tough. A large house seven and a half miles out of town caught fire from an exterior fireplace. It is the white triangle on the south of the house. The call dropped at 4:30pm

Fire quickly broke through to the attic and a strong south wind pushed the flames throughout the structure. At one point, we had four hand lines flowing plus a 2 and half feeding a blitz fire. Never could make a stop. The roof started collapsing pretty early making further interior attacks too dangerous to continue.

By 10:30 pm, this is what we were left with...

Bluebonnet plants are up, but didn't see any blooms in the pasture...

    Plants with fertilizer...

    Good stand of young plants...

Sunny days will quickly bring the blooms.

I went a few years back. I overdosed on oysters, but what a way to go!

The forecast for tomorrow has improved. Decreasing clouds with a high of 72. Expect a windy afternoon.

We’re now at 21 calls for February... we’re earning our keep.

Another successful Oyster Fry... about 1,300 plates served. Thanks to those who could make it.

    A little bit of Americana...
