I got T- boned. Simple as that. I had driven up the connecting road to US One and within half a mile I was at speed limit, 45 mph and passing two cross streets near the Square Grouper restaurant. I saw the white compact entering on the right stop for the large pick up in front of me. Inexplicably it pulled forward on my approach. I knew I was fucked and I saw what was coming. With ABS brakes I just pulled hard on both levers on my Baby Burgman. I hit the sedan at the front wheel and I never lost conciousness. I’m writing these words from my bed in Intensive care at Jackson Memorial, Miami. I have a major operation in a few hours to reassemble my pelvis. I trust I won’t bleed out in the table but it is a possibility.

Sorry to hear about that. Probably some idiot on a cell phone. Hopefully your surgery goes ok. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I cart wheeled over the hood of the sedan conscious all the way. I hit the ground flat on my back and all I could see was blue sky white clouds and power lines above me. Oh dear I thought now I get to see the tunnel of white light. I was quite calm.

Am I dying I asked the first face to enter my field of vision. The face looked startled. Call my wife I said and I rattled off her number. Ironically she was in Miami to see an allergy specialist for her persistent cough. She called friends to pick up Rusty. I lay in the road answering questions to prove my sanity.

The thing I felt most was a spongy looseness in my right thigh. Breathing was raspy and my hips hurt like a mofo, adult aching pain. I was wearing a helmet and gloves and street clothes. The difficulty was I hit the ground straight down like a sack of potatoes no sliding or rolling. My
    pelvis couldn’t take the impact.

When the paramedics said I was being airlifted to Miami I thought once again oh dear I am fucked. Not a simple broken leg. Luckily I have city insurance and because I am a resident of the county the sheriff’s Trauma Star is free to us as they won’t charge for what the insurance doesn’t pay for the $50,000 flight.

I am tired now and need to sleep. I am glad the driver of the cage, a woman it turns out is at fault. I will post more here as I am able. I face two months recovery while my union job at the city of Key West will me right. Best wishes to all.

Flew over a car one time, driver made a left hand turn right in front of me. Hit the rear brake and slid into his drivers door side ways next thing I knew l was laying on the other side of the car. Two things he said to me, “ I never saw you and I thought you were dead.” Must have surprised the heck out of him when I got up. Was lucky some how just got a swollen ankle out of it. He was nice enough to give me a ride to the hospital..... hang in there

Man this sucks. I'll be praying for you. I hope surgery goes well as well as your recovery. Modern medicine is amazing. I can't wait to read another one of your ride reports after you recover.

85E5058C-58A2-4419-9EAB-A818663C3F0A.jpeg I will be back in the saddle! Thanks for prayers and well wishes. Apparently I lost a lot of blood. Don’t know where from and my surgery may be postponed until it builds back up again. Or something.

Hang in their big guy, life throws curves. Probably lost blood internally, just enough on your face to look like a hero?:-)
On the bright side, call "The Hammer" ,he's a "heavy hitter" and his phone numbers on TV or billboards all over Florida. Then you can buy all the scoots your heart desires...:lol2
Truth is we all have these road moments when things could have turned nasty real easy what with a world in a big ass hurry. :nod
    Any hottie nurses down there?:lurk

I hate to hear this!! Probably another dumbass on the phone and not paying attention. I wish you a speedy recovery and please keep us posted.

Friday a week ago some 21yo dumb broad rear ended my wife at over 50mph who was sitting at a stand still in traffic. She never even hit the brakes and pushed her into 4 more vehicles ahead of her. Totaled her car and the one ahead of hers. These damn cell phones are just as bad as drunk drivers. Honestly I think I would rather deal with drunks as there aren’t as many.

The first thing out of my wife’s mouth as she was laying in the hospital bed was I am glad this wasn’t you on the scooter. It would have been game over leaving her and two small kids behind.

This is why I have really started to ride only early in the mornings on the weekends. I get on the road by 6am and am home by 9:30-10:00 before the dumbasses get out of bed. Sure, it could still happen but it does make me feel a little better. A LITTLE!!!!

Best wishes buddy! We are all rooting for you and hope to read more of your iron butt journeys in the near future.

WOW. So glad to hear you survived the trauma. Praying for a quick and speedy recovery. This is a setback for sure but not the end and we will eventually be reading about other riding adventures that you will have.

You know the drill after surgery, therapy, therapy therapy. You can do it. :clap

Lots of folks here on your side rooting or you.

I started following you on your 1500 miler +. I really enjoyed it and you seem like a guy I'd be proud to know. Best wishes and prayers for you. I'm glad to see you are already planning getting back in the saddle. At least if this had to happen it was close to home instead of somewhere far away from the family.
