I've talked about it a few places in the Ozsylum but I thought maybe it would be better to start a thread.

I am planning to come over next February or so and will be there for a month to celebrate my 40th birthday. Plans are to fly to Auckland or Melbourne first, somewhat dependent on weather and ticket prices. In NZ I'll be stealing @MrKiwi's Transalp and in Oz I'll be stealing @nevgriff64's XTZ750. Then I'd like to go ride around. Ideally I can get over to see @lentil in Not Gunnedah :lol3, to @Russ in Sydney and otherwise... :dunno have fun and be a doofus? If I can I'll come with my camping gear. @troy safari carpente has already warned me about the drop bears. :hide

I have a million questions about stuff like routes, signals to other riders, road courtesy, etc. In the US, for example, we tap our helmet to warn oncoming riders of police traps. This sort of thing. Any local knowledge is appreciated.

if you fly to Oz first then you can fly from there direct to Wellington once done in Oz.

I can pick you up and deliver you to Red's place of residence.

From here you can do a loop ride north for a few days then back to my place. After that head over the strait so @KiwiPewe can show you around before you head further south.

You may be able to fly back to the USA from Christchurch and if so I'll find a place for you to leave Red which would then give me a good excuse to fly south, pick her up ride the long way home.

for the loop ride from my place depending on dates I'll come along on my AT and show you around

Ah the shakey Isles. Love the place

I’m back there September and plan to be there again in January/ February.

Cheap return flights are to be had just check the Jetstar site. My September return from Sydney to Auckland was $201 Aus$

OZ is very hot February so maybe stick to the coastal stuff

We're on the tent space list, just out of Rotorua, so shoot me a PM if you'd like a bunk or two. Main local attractions here are lakes, hot pools & mountain biking. No doubt MrKiwi will have things well under control in terms of route suggestions, it's hard to go too far wrong in NZ :thumb

We have done plenty of moto-camping around NZ so keep us posted once you have an idea of where you're going & we'll have a few tips on nice spots. Oz has some great camping too, so good idea to bring the tent. Plus tourism is going crazy here so a tent gives you a lot of flexibility with where you stay without having to book too far ahead. Do get all your camping & other gear stupidly clean before entering both Oz & NZ as biosecurity is very strict.

    Cheers

I dont think you will be as far north as Cairns, but if so, drop a message or post on the Cairns Greater Region Riders thread

Most cars will flash there high beams if there is a radar trap ahead, but you can be booked for doing it as well.

Bit harder to flash high beams on a bike as they are hard wired here (on all the time)

Bed and breakfast available in Adelaide if you venture West from Melbourne.

feb- march. Wet north, beautiful south on the east coast. Delineation would be about qld border give or take. March is our wettest month here. Mind you riding in the wet is no great burden aside from it will flood...

What floats your boat? Coast? People? Empty spaces?

Arkaroola or thereabouts Jardine, stole it off the web but seems there's a good road to the top of that knob.

Australia... An ancient land, it's paradoxical that one of the oldest bits of earth was also one of the last bits to be "discovered".

Parts of the kimberlies about 4.5 billion years old iirc unlike that upstart pimple across the dutch.

Russ, I’ve never seen the circle overhead used.
I have seen an urgent “slow down” with an arm down about waist height, furiously pumping up and down.

The most common I’ve seen is still the old high beam flash.

Rider signals seem to be a big thing stateside, the Canadian I hosted over Christmas talked about all the group signals they use. (I don’t ride in big groups).

Lately, I’ve found it hard to even get a wave back from oncoming riders. :hmmmmm :dunno

Prisoners on the West Island getting uppity again?

Haven't you heard, newer is better?

Anyway cootzie, bed, shed, and breakfast available on the top of the South for you, but you knew that already .
Make time to ride the West coast of the South Island, one of the best roads in the world, when it's not raining. Best chance for that would be around Feb.

Let us know what you're after and we shall make it happen if we can.

Csm indeed but I think the way we treat kiwis is absolutely appalling. We might let you in but we don't embrace you... Appalling.
