Crusty's 1100gs hack build

For quite a few years I had been interested in sidecars. I had been attending sidecar rallies and everyone seemed to have a load of fun. I was impressed with the camaraderie of the participants. My parents had an outfit when they were young, so it was probably a latent predisposition that lurked within me anyway.
I had watched the development of Nevgriff’s 1150gsa/Ural with interest, the attachment being done by Phil Duffy, Clancy and Nev. Then Clancy built his K1100 and Brendan J had Phil fit a Chiang Jiang chair onto his Super Teneré, and I was hooked.
In my stable were two R1100gs BMWs, one with 300,000kms on it and the other like new at 35,000kms. The most used one had never given me any trouble. In fact the motor, clutch and gearbox had never been touched. I decided to give it the duty as the tug for this project and keep the fresher one as a solo.
I had been extremely impressed with the quality of the work done by Phyllis on the other projects so, when a Chiang Jiang chair became available, I approached him to do the installation for me.
Before handing the bike over to Phil, I had a new clutch fitted to carry the extra load. I figured it wouldn’t be long before it needed replacement.
 Phil sent me pics of the development as he progressed, and this kept me itching to get the outfit home, and learn to ride it. I had no experience at all of riding these contraptions, so figured it best to have it set up correctly before I started my learning.

[/FONT] I tried to keep out of his way and let him concentrate on getting the job done, but I couldn’t keep from ringing him occasionally, and I called in to see it when the frame was attached. Everything I saw, and was told, impressed me and gave me confidence in the finished product.

Phil had to call in the inspector of operations before proceeding.

I employed the help of my inspector to make sure everything was going well.

When the day came to pick it up, Phil took me into his paddock and gave me some training. It was a shame to get it dirty as I saw it as a work of art. After a while we progressed onto some back roads around the area until I felt capable of safely riding home. I followed Phil on the secondary roads to the highway, and then was on my own to face the traffic returning from the weekend away. All went well and I arrived home just after dark, having skirted the city and ridden mainly on the freeways.
The next day I was up early and went for a ride along the tourist road near where I live. There are plenty of nice corners to practice on and I enjoyed applying my “book learning”. Since then I find the solo gets very little use as I am having so much fun with the outfit.
I have had a tonneau cover made with zippered sections for the dog to stick her head out, and she seems to enjoy it as much as I do. Oh yeah, the wife enjoys it too, and keeps asking when we can go away for another weekend. It’s damned difficult having two females wanting to go away with me!
Clancy built me a rack for the back of the chair to carry my camping gear and also made mounting brackets for a very nice windshield that Brendan J had made for me



 I have been very appreciative of the support given me by Phil, Neil and Brendan in setting this thing up. As a raw novice I have been able to concentrate on gaining some much needed riding skills, and look to the future when I will, hopefully, be a competent rider.

No I haven't Brendan, but I've taken her for a ride in it.
The screen works well, with the wind hitting her helmet on the visor, so no more problems of her helmet trying to lift off.

Good to see another rig up and running.
Interested in the mods to the standard CJ chair as well.
They can stand a few upgrades me thinks.

She's a staffy crossed with a kelpie, Ray. A great companion, but gets overexcited and jumps up on people. She can also be very disobedient (as in totally ignoring me) when she has her nose on the scent of a possum or rabbit.
