CX 650 Custom/ Stupid is as stupid dose ... till it's black and blue

    So...I thought i would try to do a build thread for my new (Project) to try to give some back to all the posts and threads that have inspired me.
    So you are welcome to follow along ,laugh ,joke ,scratch your head ,bitch, moan ,whatever :norton
    This is what I like to do and how I like to do it . I don't have a bunch of fancy tools or big shop.. I have been building and riding bikes since my first bike (car) at 15 1/2 (SR500) bought with all my saved pennies.
    Which was soon tore apart for high compression piston, cam and braced up spingarn and fork brace. I have built other bikes though the years which recently was a full resto for my wifes 78 honda 400 four and my 78 Guzzi cafe.

    This next one will be a LITTLE different...:wink:
    My dad kept telling me about this bike his bank teller friend had, So one day its like lets go take a LOOK :huh
    Well sure a s shit I brought it home with no real reason why except for all the hype with the cx 500 and it was just like a guzzi :clap A flying twin :clap
    Well here is the good after sitting for 12 years on the way home..

    After changing the oil and Some carb work I strapped a battery to the side and put some gas in a can and it started :D once I found the choke:huh
    Ran like crap down low but good up high.

    Now what to do with this thing?? First off the 15 inch rear wheel has to go..
    The bad..This was the one and only year (83) custom that no other year or model rear wheel will fit the swingarm or offset of this shaft.That I found and all the cx people I webbed :deal
    This sounds just like my luck .

    Though they were never released in this country, a buddy of mine imported one from the US years ago. I rode it a few times and except for the small range on the tank I enjoyed the bike itself.
    He stopped riding it one day and just let it rot outside in the salt air here. I was looking for a project and he offered it but it was too far gone.
    T'were a shame.

    Yes,when I first saw the bike I was kinda bummed it was not a 500, But after doing some research I felt much better about the 650...

    65 HP Not to shabby, bigger rod bolts and main bearings . And with some head shaving and a ground 500 cam shaft , porting ,we could get maybe 70?
    And I really like the black motor after the guzzi.
    But I'm getting ahead of myself ..

    So back to the wheel thing...What to do?? well after searching and searching I find this cx500 on youtube with a single sided swingarm :eek1
    Maybe some of you have seen this bike. A bloke in the UK built?
    And after having a 88 Hawk GT 650 (rode the hell out that thing) I said that is Freakin sexy ..What is that thing??

    I find the thing ,Which is a Honda NTV 650 :huh
    Only made in Europe,which is basically a Honda Hawk but with a shaft drive on the left side??

    the pivot pins go right in the bearings,But the threads are too far out to catch the frame ...

    So I go to my buddy Wayne who owns a moto salvage and get the other long side pin off a GL 500 and today I take them to my machine shop and show him what needs to be done so both pins will be the right size....

    For some reason I love all this little ground work stuff ,gotta go here do this, gotta go there and get that..Stupid dose...

    OK,back to it!

    The rear wheel turned out to be one more PITA :jjen Although it looks like a Hawk gt wheel would work, more searching come to find out the offset is different and all though there are lots of them in the UK for some reason not every one is willing to send one to the US??

    then i find this guy mike with a trailer full of NTV parts in UK E-bay :clap
    120$ shipped to the door. thats about what a hawk wheel goes for here...

    Oh ya, Mike says (Q) Welcome to come and see me in Scotland if you visiting! As i dream one day to visit America, but never enought time or money!
    Love you big rusty trucks as i see in movies the ones that fades with sun and have 8 litre engines running on gas. Just love all that!

    So lets move on while we wait for the swing arm bolts...
    I have spent a lot of e-bay $ trying to get the mock up parts ahead of time and one of my scores was a 02 r1 full fork set for 162$:clap plus the front wheel for 75$ w/the rotors .

    The seller said the guy he got them from put cartridges in them + new seals but he never used them on his race bike...
    I don't think I will take them apart to find out right now...I think they are Beautiful! :raabia

    Now we start a new chapter...Oh did I mention that I will have nothing to with this EASY button thing?
    It starts like this ,we buy the All balls bearing kit http://www.allballsracing.com/index.php/forkconversion
    for the cx frame to fit the R1 forks.

    And getting the bottom race off the R1 stem was a bit of a challenge.I had some pullers but nothing with jaws that long .so I asked my friend Jerry Rigger to get it off for me....He started with a sharp paint scraper and worked up from there.

    And for stage 3 we will put them in the glass beader ...........

    Now what they do not tell you is that the bearings will fit the frame and forks that dose not mean the steam will fit...:huh

    Hummm,Now I have swapped out steams before but not with these nice forks*&^%$## And we need to pull in the rake any way, maybe a little onger wheel base?

    Awe Screw It ! Lets build a new frame :eek1

    Take a Dremel with a cutting disc, cut most of the way through the bearing race without going into the stem. Now hit the cut you made with a cold chisel and the race will crack right open and fall off.

    Went to get some DOM tubing today. He had the neck but won't have the main stay till wednesday.....
    Need to turn the neck down anyway. Believe it or not i think we have a drill bit at work that will open that up a bit.

    When I said I don't have a big shop or a bunch of fancy tool thats because work dose :evil

    Witch I went by and glass beaded the trees ..

    Now I will hit them with some soft scotch brite and spray them with this Everbright stuff. Great stuff!

    You will also notice that I sand blasted the frame. Something I like to do so I can really see what I Am working with and for welding.

    As you can see one small slip trying to move the frame and the blaster got past my sleeve and opened up my glove :eek1

    See what I'm saying? You have the beefed up engine that was for the turbo and a stripped chopped bike, might be a good time to throw a turbo on there. :evil


    Frame jig will happen in the next year, I think it's time for a scratch built frame. I'm getting tired of cutting up frames to make them fit what I want.

    I've been thinking of doing one more trip on the big BMW, sell it, then add some tools to the garage with the $$. I could so much more with a mini lathe/mill and a frame jig, plus a full set of bending dies would be nice.

    You do realize that's a Russel Day-Long seat, right? It's probably worth as much (to the right person) as the whole rest of the bike.

    I gave all the old parts to my salvage buddy. We do trade...And that thing looked wonky :lol3

    I have been saving two 2x4 steel channels that I don't even remember where I got them from, for something special... These things are heavy , 1/4 ' thick.

    one of my scores was a yamaha xs 750 triple tank for 99$ :evil

    The thing is sweet not a dent! In my research I found that some CX guys used this tank because it has such a big opening on the bottom side to take the cx frame. And it looks COOL :rilla

    I want a weld in bung on the right and a vent on the left with a upholstered or leather Chest pad in the middle .:loco

    I want this bike to be a blend of old school cafe race bike with modern touches and styling....A real head scratcher . :wink:

    If have restored a 1983 CX650E, the Euro version. The engine is the same. Currently the bike has 125,000kms and still purrs like a kitten.

    A few things you should do while the engine is out.

    - Replace the stator. These engines regularly cook them, it will fail.
    - Check or replace the water pump mechanical seal, they tend to leak
    - Depending on mileage, I would replace the timing chain while you are in there
    - Replace the plug wires and caps. The plug caps have internal resistors that corrode and fail. You can take them apart and clean them, but better off to just replace them. NGK makes nice red "racing" wires that fit and look great.
    - Check the rubber carb flanges for cracks and leaks

    I would check ebay for E or Turbo model parts. Some of them stuff is much nicer and should bolt right on. The Turbo had some really trick parts. For example, my E gas tank is 19L and gives me about 350km of range. Love the swing arm and front end swap!

    The engine is surprisingly torquey for a 650 (actually 675) and will rev nicely. It really starts to pull over 6000RPM but runs out of steam before the red line.

    Got one off e-bay with 15k on it looks new. Some yamaha seal works for the water pump
    Checked the resistors they looked new,took the sump off and clean before start up,
    Bike had 29k on it and was owned by a mechanic, that was HIS bike.
    But yes will put new chain in when I get to that point. just as the Guzzi.

    Thanks for the real ride review. Any info on why they put a 500 cam in a 650 ? Top end?
    I saw one at the last show with 66k on it .
    he said he rode it every day.:D It's a Guzzahon.

    I think the 500 was more or a revver, probably tuned for more top end. The low end torque of the 650 makes for a nice ride, I wouldn't mess with it.

    Personally, I won't bother with much on that engine before you ride it. The 650 is already "a hot rod" motor. You might get a few more ponies out of it, but if you want a fast bike, don't ride a 30 year old V-Twin lump. It will never rev like a Ninja 650.

    I also had the head gaskets blow out on me, might want to replace those. They corrode around the water ports. Its super-easy on this bike, even with the engine in the frame.
