May the Force be with you.
Update on DanielByers,
Just dropped him off at hospital for his afternoon surgery & already flirting with the hot nurses.
Hats off to Hard Core Dan, how many peeps could lay in motel bed for 5 days with broken leg bones. (i only know maybe a handful).
His spirits are good & knows its now part of this adventure & will deal & overcome what is thrown at him.
So my next step is WAIT, wait until i hear about discharge & travel/transpo restrictions if any(pain-surgery wise).
Now I am off to clean & re-sanitize the motel room.
Jay, I only “know” Dan here and on Facebook. Thanks for all you’re doing. As a long time rider myself, stories like this lend peace of mind when far from home. The motorcycle community is something special indeed.
Thanks for the update Jay. Great pictures of the patient. Thanks for all your work in keeping Dan in good spirits and looking after getting him where he needs to be.
Thanks Roy. And thank you for the warm words about my son Spencer. He loved you as a teacher and is thriving at BU Grad School.
It’s uplifting knowing so many are sending positive energy my way. Both on my blog and FB. Old friends and ones made on the journey.
I love you all. Getting prepped right now. Covid test too.
Dan, I was thinking about you this morning, when you had your meeting. Only one hour to go. .
Hey Dan .... Doug here in Colorado. I’ve been following along but just caught up,with your mishap. So sorry to see what’s happened. I’m very familiar with your breaks having broken bot my tibia and fibula. Stay strong and best of luck with today’s surgery. Looks like our beer in CO will have to wait , but I shall keep you in my thoughts! All positive of course!
The way they do orthopedic surgery today, I'm curious to see if they use rods, screws and/or plates. Still have a plate in my ankle from Black Bear Pass. Those are major weight bearing bones in Dan's leg, so recovery may be awhile. Best of luck on that, Dan!
Was told most likely plates and screws for this one. Just had ekg. Leg is shaved. Going under soon
I’m still heading to Denver as soon as allowed.
We will get together then my friend. In the meantime rest and heal.
I've caught up on the RR. You rock.......you're attitude and skills are beyond what I can imagine. Sending you positive thoughts as they are probably right about now operating. I know you'll come back stronger than you were before.
They’re running late as the prior surgery went long. Just getting morphine drip and a local anesthesia shot to knee. Moving to surgery any moment. Haha there’s that morphine feel. Over and out gonna close eyes now
WOW! Talk about a blow by blow commentary! Let us know when it over!
Yikes! Good luck.
Glad you didn’t have compound fractures, that last shot would have been Ugglyy!
Let the healing begin.
That big toe nail looks pretty bad. Hopefully it is just the nail.
Still high AF from the shots but here is what I know.
Surgery was longer and more complicated than X-rays led them to believe. Lots of small fractures (7 in total plus broken big toe) and and small chips that needed to be removed.
Now a question-mark shaped plate holds the main parts together. Dr. Vandelune, the orthopaedic surgeon who did the work, was pleased with the results. Because of the additional exterior cuts they had to make to get to all the loose chips, the anesthesiologist gave me a second local as things were being put back together so I’ll be pain free through the night tonight. Then onto a new script for pills.
They want to see me again in 10 days. Then they’ll open up a few external stitches to allow removal of some internal staples, to be done before I travel to Denver.
For now, no pain is being felt. A huge sense of relief that the cutting drilling and such is behind me has brought is soooo welcome.
To my family and friends, sorry for the worry-causing event, but also understand how much it meant to me to keep me thinking in a positive direction. It would have been so easy to drift towards the other shore.
I love you all.
Thanks so much for letting us know. Glad all went well and that you are even posting this. Sleep well and heal fast our man Dan!
Fantastic that the surgery went well!
