True, but I sure dig old school carb tuning; it is a true art.

    I’m not a carb artist
And can only go by the results of the dyno work.
A smooth running bike with no noticeable fueling issues, delivering consistent performance and economy.

Off the shelf settings can get you close but a dyno tune is really the best way to go if you can. I rebuilt the carb on my DR350 using Jesse’s advice and it ran great. Would it have run better with a custom tune? Most likely yes but that wasn’t in my budget then (really wish I’d kept that bike...)

I’m also running a quality fuel filter (removed the tiny sock filter that resides in the BST40 inlet pipe) and also have been using a Guglatech pre-filter as well. I’m sure clean fuel helps keep things in order as well.

I had a great ride today from Esmereldas Ecuador to Canoa Ecuador.

Both towns on the coast, but the route South on Truncal de Pacifico, E15, was a virtual roller coaster with lots and lots of twisty roads, small 3-500 ft elevation changes and innumerable passages through small villages with names like Atacames, Same, Morocal, Salima, Chindul, El Puerto, Cheve, La Boca de Viti, Pedernales and many others I can’t remember.

Occasionally seeing the ocean on my right, temperatures subdued due to overcast skies, lending towards misty foggy conditions in the myriad of cuts and valleys. Spooky looking at times. Palms and tropical trees everywhere.

Not much traffic aside from when passing through the villages.

It was about a six hour ride.

I only stopped a few times, once to eat some fruit after riding down a sandy dirt road following a sign that pointed to “playa” (beach)

It terminated near a fishing encampment on the ocean, where I was greeted by a guy repairing his net. He had no issue with me stopping a bit, sitting on a log to eat my fruit and drink water while he went about his repair.

Am now at Hostal Canoamar in Canoa. I’ve got a dorm bed for $10/night.

It’s so nice here I decided to stay two nights before continuing to Montanita, another coastal town about 3-1/2 hrs further South.

Now it’s time to find food!

Here are some pictures from today!

I appreciate the offer but I left Quito this past Tuesday. I’m now on the coast in Canoa, heading South. Then East back into the mountains a while and then hang out in Cuenca a while too. No hurry. It is still Winter in Ushuaia. I’m taking my time heading South

    Daniel,
I got the Yellow Fever vaccination in the states before we left, and I had several days of reaction to it. My symptoms were flu-like aches, pains, chills and general feeling like crap, but with no fever. My doctor said that this was a classic reaction. FWIW, a nurse practitioner friend (Sharon, also an advrider riding south with her husband Chris, currently in Peru) told me that the reaction was a good sign, because it shows that your immune system responded to the vaccine and created antibodies.

    Just a quickish update.
I’m in Montanita Ecuador staying at Hostal Cielo. It’s away from the party center area near the beach about 2/3 mile, so it’s nice and quiet at night.
Half filled with German backpackers who laugh a lot. The woman that owns the Hostal is very nice and doesn’t seem to mind me sleeping in. I think she’s German as well. She lives here with her husband and their 3 year old daughter.
I haven’t done much the last day other than wander around the town, eat, rode on the the hostals bicycles a bit, walked the beach, ate again, etc. This is the kind of break in the riding I like, with no real issues pressing down. Bike is ready to roll. Things are good.
Think I’ll take a nap in a hammock. Yeah that’s the ticket.

I’m sure those ratios can (should) be skewed one way or another.
But basically yeah. It takes a lot of effort to get to a point where minimal effort is a goal
