It definitely was one of the trip highlights thus far! And in the Overland community the Stahlratte is a legend.
Many thanks to Captain Ludwig and the non-profit organization that owns the ship for their service! Also thanks to crew mates Anna and Edwin for their hard work and positive attitudes.

The other three are one-handed pics taken on the move while stuck behind a long line of trucks , descending from 9200 ft down to the 7000 ft range where we are now. The pics don’t do the Andes justice. We just didn’t want to stop and then have to re-pass all the trucks we managed to get around.

All the while listening to Beethoven in the helmet. Very surreal

In defence of Sinje's alternative to the Stahlratte, if you read her interesting report of how she came upon Joel and his service, it appears that Joel ensures that all the paperwork is properly taken care of.

maybe I'll look into it upon the return leg, but for now I'm pretty much done reading other's reports if you know what I mean.
    Remember what her cost was?

The extent to which horses and mules are still a viable, common form of transportation and means of getting business done has been, for me, one of the most interesting observations of the trip. Not to long ago, as we were walking in some little Colombian town, with lots of horses and what goes with that in the streets, it suddenly dawned on me; “this is what towns everywhere used to smell like!”

You could at least look at Vasilisa's photos LOL She is in Pereira near you for the past 2 years because she was determined to put 3 asshats behind bars for abusing her. It would be cool to cross path with her...very interesting lady who still plans to continue north to Alaska.

I was checking out the link you provided but was having a LOT of problems with pop-up ads everywhere and my phone kept saying it wasn’t a secure site.
    I’ll keep an eye out!
There’s also a missing rider down this way (see ADV front page) on a DR that I’m gonna keep an eye peeled for and ask around when appropriate.
    Thanks!

Where does one even buy 600 lb fishing line to catch something like that? Bet it fought hard.

This gave Adrian Cromey time to do a little needed maintenance on his bike, and for me to upload new maps to my Garmin Zumo (after a frustrating two hours of my notebook crashing repeatedly due to needing a new Windows 10 update, now done)
Our next target is La Dorada Columbia, along the massive Magdalena River, and then South to Salento Colombia, high in the Andes and home of Cocora Valley and the worlds tallest palm trees, wax palms reaching over 200 ft tall. Should be epic!
Adrian is out gathering supplies to cook vegetable soup for dinner tonight.
As soon as my map update is done, we’ll walk somewhere to eat lunch.
    I enjoy these down days.
Riding every single day, with the associated travails (fuel, maintenance, finding lodging, rain, heat, traffic) is more tiring than most could imagine. Even my motorcycle-riding friends may think it’s all fun and games based on my up-beat attitude. I can tell you now after 10 months riding (left June 2018, home three months after becoming ill in Oaxaca) that while certainly a grand adventure, it takes serious attitude and expectations adjustments to become comfortable doing this.
It’s still the best thing I’ve ever done in my life (aside from being Spencer Byers ‘ Father)
The city of Guatape is not only very old, but prides itself on the colorful plaster relief decorations on the fronts of buildings. Many of them contain strong 3-dimensional elements that really make the images “pop”
Here are some I liked from a long walk around town this morning before we took a tuk-tuk ride to climb the giant basalt granite mobility outside town, El Piñon de Guatape.

The steps imbedded in the rock are kinda sacrilegious, but amazing at the same time......There is a rock that resembles this one, sans stairs, outside Queretaro, Mexico, in the town of Bernal. Did you pass by it on your way south?

Colombia looks a lot cleaner then Mexico. Is it?

    Thanks for the awesome pics.

It’s really quiet something to see Jay. Even we’ll out of town in the countryside we saw folks carefully painting their homes in bright colors

You’re welcome! Glad you’re enjoying following along!
The Bernal rock is smaller, but you’re right. There’s a resemblance.
In some rural areas you still see plenty of roadside trash etc here, but still, nothing like in Mexico. Many Pueblo Magico cities make great efforts to keep things clean, but things are on a different scale here. For instance, the tap water here in Guatape is potable.

What a fantastic array of colours. The 3D murals/plaster walls are amazing. I've looked at them 3 times so far this morning and each time I see something new. Great job on the pictures Dan. Your t-shirt in the picture matches the surroundings.

I just had a fleeting thought from a documentary piece on Pompeii. They excavated a brothel which had beautiful murals depicting what was "on the menu". So of course I pondered how such an establishment would be decorated here.
I make no apology for my lustful mind.
