    In reality I’m freaking out.

This isn’t the “grand plan” being set into motion that the journey was last June. Not even close.

This is more like “Jesus....I’m leaving in FOUR FUCKING WEEKS???”

Maybe it was abandoning the goal and heading back to the US last year.

Maybe it’s the reality of dealing with a bike that’s now well-used and in need of attention (bike was new last June)

Maybe it’s the now near-constant thoughts of and actions-concerning staying healthy.

Maybe (and I suspect that it’s this mostly) I just need badly to get back on the road where I belong.

It’s the only place where my mind is focused. Where the things that seem to be driving me and this country insane disappear into the mist, replaced by a never ending stream of concerns about REAL life.

    What’s that plant?

    What’s that smell?

Wow that is a beautiful sight!

    Wonder where this road goes?

Should I turn left or right?

How long will that tire hold up?

Is that rain coming? Smells like it.

    The list is endless.

Got the motor degreased today. It’s pretty clean. Tomorrow I install the gas tank and try to start her up.
Need to ride her to find the source of the oil leak.

    Well that sucks.

I applied for an "International Traveler " pass to attend Overland Expo West in AZ May 17-19, right before my swing South into Mexico and then Central and South America. Reading through the list of qualifiers, it seemed clear that I did.

I received an email from them today saying basically "request denied". No reason given.

Now I need to decide whether I want to spend the money to attend or not.

She fired right up and settled into a nice idle. Perhaps a bit high, as I had increased it to compensate for the dirty pilot jet, which is now clean.
Went for a short ride to make sure there would be no issues on the day-ride to come in the next few days. After that, will again pull the tank, and hopefully the powder will show the oil leak’s exact location.
She ran strong! And it felt good to be rolling.

So does that mean you found a way to get in? I just read that you were denied and was going to suggest going to some of the manufactures of products you have on your bike and see if they were going and if so if they had an extra pass in exchange for the bike sitting in their booth or something?:dunno

Aside from waiting for the next decent day weather-wise to take a day trip and hopefully find that oil leak, Sunny is pretty much ready to leave!

    Finished some stuff today.

Final fitting in new Yenkro fairing.

    Side panels cleaned and installed.

Completed fitting Givi top case to new rack.

Drilled mounting hole and mounted new Acme-Zoom Mule Pack panniers (thanks Bob Earl! They fit great).

Swapped over Rockstraps to new pannier lids.

Cleaned from wheel, front brake caliber (pads is good shape)

Installed reflective rim tape to front wheel.

    Still need to:

    Pull rear wheel, clean wheel.

Install reflective rim tape to rear wheel.

Install new Cush drive rubber pieces. I went through two sets of new OEM Cush rubbers on the first part of the trip. The new ones are made of polyurethane like a skateboard wheel, and should last much longer than the OEM rubber ones, which compress and harden with use, allowing play in the sprocket carrier. This in turn causes excessive wear to the cartridge bearing in the sprocket carrier. Thanks to Procycle for coming up with a solution to a known DR650 issue.

Install new rear tire (already have)

Chain and sprockets were replaced in Denver. Still good

Hmmmm am rambling now but that’s about it for now.

I'm still going back and forth with them on their decision, but thanks for the idea. It's a good one, and I know that Woodys will be there!

Or I could just spend the money, which equals about 4 days on the road, budget-wise

It only shows me that the nominal 50 votes needed to qualify for round two were reached.
Does it show you a higher number ?

I read-ed the thingy at the tip of the whats-it.

"So what are you waiting for? Show us your COOL RIDE!

How to Enter: 1) Upload your photo and talk up your rig

    2) Share your entry and collect 50 votes to move on to the next round!"

So it looks like you advance to the swimsuit competition. You gonna get bikini wax or just shave?

Danimal, I enjoyed both reports and I am happy that all of your health issues are behind and that you will head out again soon.
As someone that has done a few of these adventures I want to suggest that you might be able to earn $ on the road and, therefore, keep going for a bit longer.
One of my south-of-the-US-border trips was meant for 1 yr and became 4 years alltogether because I ended up connecting to people/work in Costa Rica. Just a thought... Best wishes!

    Hey Jay!
I’m thinking just the bikini wax.

They gave me their final decision at Overland Expo that my two-part trip, even though it crossed International borders, doesn’t qualify for a free entry pass. So getting in on the “cool ride” thing would be apropos lol.
Not sure if “round two” will be a fresh tally of votes or is the total still tallying in the background. Whatever.

Thanks for taking the time to check in and follow along!
I was just recently offered work in the Santiago area in Mexico, and seriously told the guy I’d look him up on my way back North.
Getting nervous and excited now. Like over the top wired.
Rear wheel came off today, degreased and cleaned well. Took to my buddy to have a new Tractionator GPS tire installed. Then the new PU Cush rubbers go in.
Bikes ready to ride tomorrow. Oh boy.

Thanks Andy. Miss ya my friend

And thanks again Ed for the garage space!

Rear wheel went on easily after the new tire was mounted. The new Procycle Polyurethane Cush rubbers also went in easy (heard they were a tight fit)

Cleaned and oiled the air filter and breather filter.

Fired right up and am out riding! (Actually am at Craft Beer Bar eating shrimp tacos lol)

Tomorrow will be a nice day trip. Nothing crazy, but some high speed stuff in there to get the oil pressure up and get that leak identified.

    Wheels are so clean!!
