I miss you Mark, and also wish you were here. I got to video chat with Spencer (my 25 yr old Son in Grad school in Boston).
Looks like I’ll have some awesome friends to travel with in the next sections! Looking forward to it.
Today in fact the four of us did a 200km loop into the Atacama desert with our bikes unloaded of all luggage. It was crazy! Two guys went down but weren’t hurt. I nearly crashed several time when the dirt and rock road suddenly turned to deep sand (I absolutely HATE deep sand) but didn’t go down.
Sunny continues to impress. Both me and those that ride with me. She really takes it all and comes out laughing.
We rode through a national park in Chile filled with geothermal artifacts and geysers. It was a freaking blast. You would have loved it.
    Pictures forthcoming.
Tonight another party at the Hostal. This one much larger with tons of great food and what seemed like an endless supply of beer, wine, Pisco sours, vodka and coke, Mexican cocktails....you name it. It’s all gone now.
    Me too. Gone lol.
Maybe tomorrow after the long recuperation, I’ll get the pictures from the last two days out. Here are a few cell pic

Merry Christmas Dan. I'll spend mine alone with no family here. YOU are doing it right to 3 am with new friends. Well done!

I'll go downtown later and have turkey and dressing.

Merry Christmas, Happy holidays and kind wishes for all my friends and others that are following along. It was another night of food and drink and frivolity. Christmas songs from the countries of all the Hostals guests were played. Tons of food and good times. It was another 3am bedtime for me, 3 nights in a row.
So this morning I decided to stay here, drink coffee and get the Nikon pictures out while Kurt, Olaf and Sergio walked into town for lunch. I was (am lol) just too hung over.

My masterful rock stack in the Atacama Desert. Should still be there in a thousand years (well, maybe not the top three little ones. They barely balanced)

Thank you for the holiday wishes, and thanks for taking the time to read the whole thing.
Yesterday in the desert the Stop and Go plug failed and the tire went flat. A fresh sticky gooey plug went in and is holding fine. I think because the nail went in at an angle, the bottom of the mushroom plug never seated against the tire's inner way well. A gooey plug should hold better.
Thanks Trice dude. Am honored you're here and following. I'm thankful for your advice and suggestions early on in my journey.

    You too! And I will!

Yeah, the back is still acting up, but I'm hanging in there. Hope your Holidays are filled with love.

NP, thank YOU for taking the time to follow along.

You're not alone, as you have me as your amigo. Last night was tough on me too, with a long video chat with my Son, and a long message chat with my Father and family who were gathered for Christmas, the first I have missed in many years.

Thanks Gordon. Same to you and yours!

Memorable Christmas for sure! Loved the bottle Christmas tree. Over the years I sold hundreds of those bottle drain trees in my homebrew shop. You have kept me going this winter while I wait to start riding Feb 1.

    Merry Christmas dude!
You’re in for a treat riding through the Salar de Tara en route to Argentina - beautiful area. Also if you opt to head to Salta via S.S. de Jujuy there is a wicked twisty, narrow section of asphalt south of Jujuy (the old Rt9). Not to be missed!
    Keep smiling!

After a lengthy day in the desert, I’m safe and sound in Susques Argentina!
We wanted to make it further, but non-stop climbing (15,800 ft) and a glitch in the Matrix that caused Kurt to turn around after 1-1/2 hours and ride back to the hostal as he had forgotten something, both led to decisions to shorten the goal.
So, myself, Olaf and Sergio continued on to the Chile-Argentina border crossing at Jamal. Our thought process was that it would be nominally three hours for Kurt to return to point zero. So we stopped in Jamal after a lengthy border (got caught behind a bus load of folks) and found wifi at a gas station and messaged him.
Then we rode to Susques and got two doubles at El Kactus hotel.
    Mehhh WiFi.
Now to chill, eat and wait for word from Kurt. Hopefully he’s in route and gets the message.
Plenty of pics coming. Today we rode on the surface of Mars it appeared.

    Kurt update:
So as we waited and waited, going over timelines and travel estimates trying to predict when Kurt might show up, we realized that success in meeting his arrival was wholly dependent upon his finding WiFi and seeing our messages. There is NO cell coverage in the Jamal border area.
So we waited. And waited. And every estimated time came and went.
Finally near midnight he replied to Sergio.
He rode right past Susques. He stopped in Pachacámac and found all Hostals full.
So he rode another hour to Jujuy where he is now. We will leave here soon and pick him up.
Then we will try to make Utopia Motorcycle camp. But with old route 9 included it’s a 9 hour ride.
    Gotta get moving.

Ahh...the joys and pitfalls of riding as a group. I’m sure after so long of doing solo traveling, it’s a nice change of pace having others to share the experience with.

Happy New Year Dan! Finally caught up after a few days reading during free time. Thoroughly enjoying your RR! My wife and I did this trip over 9 months in 2013 & 2014 on our ‘08 GSA. Thank you for refreshing the amazing memories we have of our journey. Makes me want to do it all over again, and maybe stay a lot longer this time... Keep the rubber side down!
