Made it way up there and back to within a hundred feet of easy gravel and then this. You can tell by that line it wasn't going to end well.

I got back to camp early, took a break and then around sunset a short hike.

Nice light this time of day/year.

It gets dark quick. I built a fire and had dinner before it got dark, but was still crawling into my sleeping bag around 8.

Out of the sleeping bag around 7 and no direct sunlight until 8:30ish. I stoked the fire, had some coffee and oatmeal, made another turkey sandwich and loaded the camp gear while it was warming.
    Up Beef Basin today.

First stop, about 15 miles up.

I was going to try to come into Canyonlands from the south, but just past the 'Sand Canyon' sign I ran into snow. Not enough to ski, but enough that I didn't feel like going up as I would need to come back down.

    t[IMG]

Picked a nice spot for lunch on the way back down..

Back to the truck by 2pm and home by 5ish.

Time to get caught up here. Not as much riding this year. But that's another story.

This one turned out pretty cool for the phone. Not that I know what I'm doing with a camera anyway.

Probably from August ??, 2018. Busy couple of months from June through August. Moved to another house...closer to Purgatory.
Let me elaborate. Bought the house end of May. Started to move and the 416 fire evacuated us in early June. Luckily we still had our other house and hadn't completely moved in yet. July until we were able to move. Cool house, a couple acres of aspens and cliffs. But it needs work. Still.
So it was August until I could escape to the high country.
    Stony Pass.

I hit Lime Creek off of 550 on the way up and was at the top before 8 am.

This dude was yodling way up on the Colorado Trail.

    Yes. That's why we're here.

I ought to put some of these in the Rockies 'where is this' photo thread as I'm sure someone can tell me where I was.

Sometime in August I was able to slip away for a few days. It was a ride, not a photo shoot. Needed miles. A good excuse for not responding to work calls is to ride all day and only stop in areas without cell reception. Easy enough in my neck of the woods.
A little recap, maybe for my own memory (or lack thereof):
Left home on a Thursday morning with the GS fully loaded. 550 to 50. I think my first stop was Cero Summit. Then Monarch Pass. Buena Vista for a late lunch and camp on the south side of Guanella Pass. Nice family next door shared some leftovers and I shared the tequila.
Up early and looks like rain. Over to I70 and east to Idaho Springs and the Oh My God road up to Central City. I'm a map guy and got lost there. Then found a n easy way back to Idaho Springs and up 119 to Nederland.
It was raining by then. And my charging chord was broke. I went a few miles towards Estes Park hoping to camp, but between the rain and the lack of charging power, I scedadled back down the hill and got a room in Boulder. And a charging chord. But I waited until after 5 pm for that.
Saturday morning and I found a spot to set up camp. I think I was at the Longs Peak trailhead. Looked like a music festival with all the cars parked up and down the road. Oh yeah. Front Range. Not Western Slope.
I went up into the park and took the Old Fall River Road up. Almost wore out my clutch. Couldn't even get out of first gear. Bumper to bumper mayhem. Or front range normalcy, I guess.
Went down the other side, stopped for a snack and back over to the visitor's center and a late lunch in Estes Park. Back to camp for a peaceful rest.
It waited until I was packing to start raining again. Not even sure which way I was going, I headed south, but it looked like more rain that way. So up over the pass through the park again. Which is what I wanted to do anyway.
I think these are the only pictures of the trip. Somewhere up top.

Back down the west side. Leadville and then a jaunt over to the west side of Independence Pass and back. Motel in Salida.

Monday and back over 50 towards Montrose. I was early (for lunch at Don Jilberto's anyway). So I went out 92 for a half hour or so and turned around. That one's always worth the extra effort. If you haven't ridden that yet and you are in the area, don't miss out!
On the road or Don Jilberto's.
    Back home with xxxx miles.

Breakfast and ride Last Dollar and over to Norwood the back way. More highway then necessary with the little red pig, but it did fine.

And dinner Saturday night at the rally hq.

GS out in the same neck of the woods in early November. Cat Creek dirt road connects 160 south to Pagosa Junction and the north end of the Navajo Reservoir.
    Lunch stop.

Great ski season (45 days!) with more snow then we've seen in a while here in the four corners region of SW Colorado. I think Purgatory was up over 130" at one point. Just down the hill at my place it snowed again last night (5/17).
So, not much riding. Did a shakedown 225 mile ride in early April in preparation of the upcoming Heart of California ride.
This ride was organized by gpsKevin. If you haven't heard of him and the following trip sounds interesting, look him up.
I arrived at the V6 ranch, where we were ending the trip, with my GS in tow and met two of the other riders doing the same thing. I unloaded and made my way into Paso Robles, where all the riders (I think there were 14 total) met for our first two nights.

Street tacos and a few beers that evening and a good rest for the next days ride.

The plan today is to loop back to Paso Robles for the night.

    HoC 3 m.JPG
The idea of these rides is that everyone has their gps loaded with the route for the day. There's a blue main route and red (more difficult, unpaved) and green (shortcuts if you're running late). Folks tend to group in sizes of 2 to 5 riders. I hooked up with the ride Yoda for a few of the days and a good group of guys,
    an HoC 4 m.JPG
We rode up through Indian Valley and Peachtree Valley and over through King City.
Then up through Fort Hunter Liggett towards the ocean. Nacimento Furgison Road was a twisty romp up to the first 'Red' route.
    HoC 5 m.JPG
Coast Ridge Trail and Los Burros road descends to Hwy 1 near Gorda.
    HoC 7 m.JPG
Hot and clear up top, but much cooler and cloudy on the descent.

    HoC 11 m.JPG

$7.40 a gallon for premium in Gorda. Glad we fueled up in King City.
    HoC 14 m.JPG
Down Hwy 1. Don't see these critters much up in the mountains.
    HoC 15 m.JPG

    Another stop along 1.
    HoC 20 m.JPG

Back to Paso Robles via some twisty one lane roads for the night.

It rained a bit for the day. Which meant some thick clouds on the route.
Hooked up with two riders today. There's 'donut holes' on the routes that are meeting spots for you and the crew you ride with.
We headed south and east out of Paso Robles and onto 101 and south for a bit to 166 east and then south on some twisty, narrow roads. Today's adventure consisted of the clouds. Visibility was 20' for a good portion of the ride. Imagine all of a sudden there's a white van, no headlights, coming at you on a 1 1/2 lane road. Or a bicyclist suddenly appears out of nowhere.
HoC 25 m.JPG Dropped down into Santa Barbara on Camino Ceilo, another twisty road. The other two riders took the green route. One of them was 80 plus and still riding, but I can understand the visibility issue.
    HoC 27 m.JPG

    HoC 28 m.JPG
Only night on the ocean for the trip. I don't get to the Pacific much. No oceans up at 8200'.
    HoC 30 m.JPG
There's always somewhere walking distance for dinner on these rides. Had a good fish taco plate (thanks russ) down the street, then a quick walk along the beach.

    210 Miles.

Out towards Oija on Casitas Pass, the 33 up into Los Padres NF.
I didn't take many pictures in the morning. Part of the blue route was closed due to construction or destruction, so out near Frazier Park we headed north on 5 to 99, then onto the red route, which had us on some steep, rough dirt. Nothing very difficult, but not knowing how far you are going to be in first or second gear and how many gates you need to go through makes it an adventure. The riders typically spread out to keep the dust down, and use the donut holes to regroup.

    HoC 33 m.JPG

    HoC 35 m.JPG
I think we were on Comanche Point road for the dirt up to Tehachapi.

One of my favorites of the trip was Breckenridge Road, which is 40 some miles of twisty up and over the hills and into Bakersfield.
