Dakar styling was the main reason I got my Tengai, also.
Yet: despite Blackwater Natl DS 'hero' sections, and CO singletrack- I never even cracked the bodywork.
    I so regret selling it.

Kawasaki offered it here for one year: 1990. I bought it from my local Kawasaki dealer, upstate NY. If fact, they gave me a discount, as they were not sure they's be able to sell it. I always got good comments on the bike when I was out and about.
I built a robust aluminum bellypan for it, not trusting the plastic one.

We saw those in 2007 when we were there.

I'd seen the early BMW's in the late 70's at a dealer show in the states.

If that is the same generation as a '91 framewise, Enduro Engineering has a skid plate listed, if ever interested.

Probably some truth to that. I grew up in the 80's watching Dakar and still love the old bikes. They are some ungainly beasts. I'm pretty sure I would much rather actually ride the newer rally bikes like the RFR 690s and 450s:-). I'm guessing the combination of your RFR and your extensive rally experience would make for a pretty capable package for adventure riding - definitely on a whole other level than most of us:ricky

I was already fully grown when I saw anything about Dakar. Probably Cycle Magazine or maybe something else.
THen I got to touch an actual Dakar BMW at a dealer show and meet one of the riders. His accent was pretty thick and my anything other than English was nil, so plenty of nodding, pointing and hand waving.
I really liked the look of the KTM 950's then the new 450 RFR stole my heart.
They are one of my dream bikes for sure. If I win the lottery I'll buy a couple and get then set up by LPR.
For now, I just look at them and sigh. Love that If You See Kay graphics on your bike.

I was keeping with the Dakar look. The main plate was 1/4", we machined grooves where it bent. Side wings were thinner stock.

Can't believe I just found this thread a few weeks ago. It's a shame that the links to so many photos are no longer valid. I wish I could see all of them.

I wish the race organizers would do a big bike class made for totally factory showroom machines. They could change the suspension setup for the riders weight only. The rest of the machine had to remain stock. Tire selection is totally open. Safety add on such as skid plates and crash bars along with the safety drinking water, but that's it. Power train, seat and frame remain totally stock. Limit the factories to 5 examples of each machine. Honda's Africa Twin vs KTM's 1090R vs Yamaha's Super Tenere` vs Ducati's Multistrada Enduro..........etc ! ! ! I think that would be an awesome testament to the production bikes ! ! !
