Heard the Saudi's are offering big money to host the Dakar rally and it could go there as early as 2020 . Anyone one else heard the rumours or can confirm?

I heard a rumour that Angola/Namibia were also in negotiations.

Mine was literally a rumour. But from an ex-competitor.

There has been a lot of talk about it over in the Racing section for a few weeks (months?) now, but rumors of it staying in South America are equally as strong.

Would there be certain legal issues with female competitors driving vehicles in Saudi Arabia?

    NO...
I want to go there way less than North Africa or the deserts of South America.

How about Australia, or ideally a Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan-Uzbekistan loop ?
    A Silk Road Dakar !
    Truly exotic, remote and tough.

Not some nouveau riche country's trophy, a GWagen ride away from 5 star aircon.

If it moves, it will be money related.

The Saudies have money to burn so I'm not surprised.

I also understood that the Rally gave help/assistance to the local Comunity - poor. Maybe it's a way of doing that with the really wealthy paying.
No mater where it is held let's just enjoy it while it lasts.

Have to be my choice, the "Stans", sitting on my couch watching the change in topography that the region has would make for a great event, likewise getting away from nothing but deep sand would have to be more appealing to the riders. Until the Dakar event went to south america i had no idea that there was so much desert there (south america), i was expecting to see riders ploughing through jungle trails with the amazon river in view!:*sip*

Yes, South America opened my eyes to the geography.
Saudia Arabia also has lots of different geography.
Saudi Arabia is 2,150,000 sq Km
Western Australia is 2,529,000 sq Km

I am pretty sure they will be able to makr enough track and variety in Saudia
