I couldn't agree more. The mud out there is slick and you never know how deep the mud with water laying on it is either. We went in June I believe and a lot of the southern part was closed due to muddy roads.

GanzerB and myself are planning to do the DaKal loop trip August 10 to August 20. We want to end on the south portion and see the solar eclipse on 8-21. I have a self sub-stained camper van with solar to power the refrigerator ect. We have a trailer for extra gas and supplies and can boondock for days. We are experienced average riders. Can anyone give us some routes that would help us in our planing of the DaKAL?

Instead of doing it like a figure 8 (as mentioned on the website), start in Edgemont and head north along the western edge of the state and then work your way back down south. So clockwise from Edgemont. If you watch my vid, we camped out on top of some really cool cliffs that were just northeast of Edgemont off the main hwy.

On Mapsource I can view Camp Crock to Buffalo, but when I download it to my 60Csx I can't find the section. Any ideas what I am doing wrong.

Is there an updated recent set of tracks for this? Thanks

Edit: Found the DAKAL website. Gonna donate and support. Thinking about riding it in late June.

Group of 6 of us, from Colorado headed up in June! Starting from Edgemont area on June 8th.
Thanks Blasterbill & crew for all the efforts. Done loads of adventures around CO and UT over the years - stoked to check out a new locale!!
Will check in closer to departure for any trail conditions updates.
    Keep smiling all

Hey engineman - we had an awesome trip!!!
Trailered up to Edgemont and departed that afternoon, crossing the Cheyenne River, and on up through Wind Cave and camped in the Nat For just west of Custer State Park. Awesome lap through the bison in the morning, out past Sylvan Lake State Park, Needles Hwy (total highlight, even though pavement!!!), past Mt Rushmore, skirted the west side of Pactola Lake, and had to navigate a few route closures that had us rocking through some pretty spicy re-routes, but awesome. Ended up in Deadwood for the night, then to Sturgis for a visit to moto museum and camped at Belle Fourche Lake (totally amazing free camping on the lake shore - worth it!), then we deviated quite a bit and bounced over to Devil's Tower, then back towards the real route and camped up on Cement Ridge, near the lookout. WOW!! Amazing sunset and sunrise. Spent the final two days snaking all over the Black Hills.
All in all, it was a great trip and Bill and crew have laid out a great route. We did not do the northern half - it is mostly just putting miles under the tires on gravel roads. The real highlights are the southern half!!!
We were on 2 800GSA's, a 690, a 790, a 990 and a DR650. No issues and the route was super fun and nice change for our group. We are headed back out among our native mountains of CO in a couple weeks, but it was good to see a new place, and the folks in South Dakota were super friendly!!
    Hope that helps!

The ride through Slim Buttes shouldn’t be missed if you do, ride it all the way to the north & if possible plan on camping up there.
