I'm putting a plan to ride this thing. Actually don't need a plan---just go--it's as simple as that !!!

I think I'm going to camp and leave my vehicle in Wind Cave National Park--------$9 a nite for old people with the parks pass--it's right on the route---solves my where to park my van problem. They don't do reservations--------I like that.

Also-----you guys that live up there-----------I really don't want to camp below 40°----I'm thinking that temps below that are possible that time of year--what do you guys think ????---I know no one can predict the weather for sure---but just a educated guess would make me better informed.

Probably start riding around the 10th or 11th.
I'm holed up in a tornado shelter right now and ain't coming out till the holiday traffic is over with.:jack:jack

Need to talk to my riding buddy---we are either going to do this or the NEBDR. I'm prefering this ride.

@Orangecicle and I are leaving for the TSDAT and DAKAL tomorrow. Long term weather forecasts show that low 40s are likely all week but I'm not seeing anything below that yet

Temps overnight in the Hills will be in the lower 40’s. As I’m writing this, the weather is on....Chance of snow Sunday/Monday. Then it gets sunny & nice for several days.
You guys are going to have a good ride! Perfect time of the year!

If this ride happens----my buddy HighFive can't start riding till Sept. 26th.
Still thinking of camping in Wind Cave National Park and leaving vehicles there.
Ride South----and try Crossing the Cheyenne river---doing it this way we wouldn't have to backrack to much if we can't cross the river.

Any motels you guys know of that would let us leave our vehicles ????
I may have asked this already ???? sorry if I did.

Spring Creek Inn near Hill City was great for us and let us leave our truck and trailer there during the ride.

Big Thanks to Bill and all who made this ride possible.
We finished the ride a few days ago---the fall colors were pretty amazing.
We didn't get to ride the most Northern part as my riding buddy had to be back to work and I'm not comfortable at all riding stuff like this alone.

Met 2 really nice guys on very big bikes-------they were having no problem and actually caught up to us very quickly in a gnarly rocky section when I had to stop and pee.

Camped at Wind Cave National park ---left our tow vehicles there.
    High Five can cook-----------and I can.............well.............mmmm..........EAT !!!

High Five rode across the Cheyenne river.

Me ------I pushed my bike as HighFive and a bystander got my bike across.
the rocks and mud were like , snot, ice slime.

This guy reared around very fast and gave me a stare down I will never forget.
High Five thought I was a gonner.

    Yeah.....what BigDog said! :deal

I can’t think of nothing better than riding a fine horse into new country.

Who knew South Dakota was THIS gorgeous? I was blown away by the landscape and the fabulous two track trails along this route. It’s got a mix of everything, and never quits surprising you with fantastic scenery.

This was one of the best rides of my life. And I’ve had a few, to say the least. Good trails, great scenery, perfect weather, awesome bikes. And, I got to do it with my bestest buddy on earth!

I’ll cherish this ride for the rest of time. It was a good’un.

Glad you guys got to see & enjoy the ‘backside’ of South Dakota! Too bad you missed the northern portion, especially since the Edgemont area was your favorite !
Come back, ride what you missed then head west via the Northern Route....all the way to Oregon!

Gotta love what High Five said about their trip and completely agree!!!! Who knew So Dakota was soooo beautiful? We too have ridden all over and we were blown away with our trip on the DakAL last year. Sounds crazy when we live in the mountains of ColorRADo and ride all over here and SE Utah (two trips out there already this spring!) but the DakAL trip was one of our best ever. Amazing camping and as others have mentioned, riding through the bison is a total thrill. Scary for sure because you never know what they might do, but such amazing animals. As BigDog reported, the Cheyenne River crossing is super slimy.
Other than that, have a blast!!!
