We made it back to pavement. Jeff managed to snap of some goober on a 250 just like the one I was riding. Good thing I’m a lot cooler than him.
C476477A-F074-4AC2-B30A-4EC5A2F9B4AD.jpeg We slabbed back to Marfa. Of course we obeyed the speed limits on this leg of the trip!!! 52083A58-F20C-4A1D-BAE3-5BAD8D01592B.jpeg Jeff and I said “Adios” at the courthouse in Marfa with plans to meet up again soon for another ride. He went back to his place in Alpine and I headed back home. F3A8F6EA-167A-458E-BC00-46CF8BB4769D.jpeg 3D415FD6-502A-418B-8987-8A4C23B47B1C.jpeg

I stopped in Ft. Davis to top off my tank and saw dark clouds ahead. A quick look at the radar confirmed it... rain. 2CAD1215-BD61-4675-8BC2-2ACA76261196.png CF93AB92-AC81-4842-AE1B-6C17C97ED6DA.jpeg It wasn’t too bad at first. Nice easy rain. It ended up just about drowning me for a few minutes though. F2F5BC85-2816-44E5-89B6-318540587760.jpeg I made it through the storm and enjoyed a nice cool ride home. That’s where I’m sitting now with a cold adult beverage. I still have work to do here and I’m sitting around posting this drivel!!! We passed thru a couple of days ago, the day after some very heavy rain. The same as above? They taxed me out of my Houston home, and although I wound up in AZ, Alpine and the surrounding area was very much in the running. 'Love the area, and it's sure growing! Thanks for the report!

Jeff Davis county is some beautiful territory. I've been going to the Davis Mountain Brigade's rendezvous for 20 some years.
Kind of imagine we know some of the same people.

Excellent! Keep 'em coming! Lots to explore, it seems like. :thumb

When I was in Alpine visiting a friend I met a guy on an old BMW at Harry's bar. He told me that he has a shop in the area. You know him? The next day I saw him on a beautifully restored beemer. I can't remember his name.

There are 2 shops in town that I know of. One is kind of a beemer guy. He has a shop on the west end of town. But there are several folks in Alpine with some great old restored and a few original beemers.

So, I met a random guy on the internet who said: drive 400 miles to this spot, and I'll buy your bike:

    IMG20210514123409 (1).jpg

Of course the answer is YES! Next, he said: follow me down 9 miles of dirt roads to my place in the mountains - I'll pay ya there. Again: obvious 'YES' - what could go wrong?! The next step was planning a ride together for the next day!

    IMG20210515121355-Dyn.jpg

We spent an excellent day on a couple red pigs in the desert.

    IMG20210515124635-Dyn.jpg

I mean, I guess there are better ways to spend a day, but nothing comes to mind.

We parted paths, and I headed back to my little place in the mountains. I didn't get much rain, but I could see it falling up north 'round Miter Peak and the Davis Mts.

    sunset.jpg

There's nothing quite as nice a day of riding then evening rain in the desert.

Great to meet ya, MT Pockets; we'll meet up again, I'm sure.

Yeah!!! Memorial Day Weekend!!! Three days of.......
    Work.
Mamacita and I had to stick around the ranch this weekend. Things are busy around the ranch, but we managed to sneak off for a trip to Ft. Davis for a late lunch. I really didn’t plan to post anything about it, so not many pictures today. 2B91DD0F-0160-41E1-92DE-81E93FC51CB2.png After lunch, I noticed some clouds building up. A quick check of the radar on my phone confirmed it... storm’s a brewing’
We loaded up and headed out, thinking maybe we could get around it. No such luck. We got just out of town and hit pretty good rain. I don’t mind getting wet, but something about this cloud told me to turn around. We headed back to town and took cover at a service station next to the courthouse that is closed for the weekend. 8A29C848-A349-4434-BA78-C093B4E0FAB5.jpeg That’s right, my feelings about this storm were right, the hail started just as we pulled under cover. E9C126F8-E197-4449-921D-CCE94B88E320.jpeg How appropriate. We just happened to hole up across from Fort Davis’s Hometown Heroes Monument. E43204E1-AAC8-4313-B454-55D889FA58A7.jpeg Mamacita and I waited out the storm in town, hoping it was raining like this back at the ranch. Unfortunately we didn’t get any.
Sorry for the short, poorly planned post. Y’all keep the rubber side down and we’ll see you next trip!!!

“Cool! Hey Dad, check this out. What is it?”
How many of you guys know what that is?
Bonus points if you’ve used one. Yep, I’m getting old too.

I believe it's a key that came with every can of SPAM (potted meat). You inserted the small metal tab into the slot and twisted the key around the can's perimeter to open. The thin metal roll probably rusted and fell off the key many years ago. I think SPAM has a pull top now. And YES, I'm getting up there in years.

Enjoyed your report. The Davis Mountains area of Texas is a special place.

Gotta love SPAM (Stuff Posing As Meat). We still eat it pretty often. Spam and potato or spam and eggs burritos are a favorite when we have guests at the ranch. (Just don’t tell them it’s spam until after they eat it)

Well, no motorcycle pics for the last couple weekends. Things have been busy on the ranch, and I’ve been wrenching instead of riding. I mounted up some new TKC 70s on the Versys and serviced it. This morning I rebuilt the forks and added a longer preload spacer on the F650gs. We are getting ready for a little longer ride away from the Davis Mountains, so stay tuned!!!

Last weekend we were at the Texas High School State Finals Rodeo. My baby girl made it in the Cutting Horse Competition. She is just in her second year of riding cutting horses and ended up number 21 in the state. Not too bad kiddo!!! I figured I would share a few of those “riding” pics. We are headed out on a grand adventure, and I will try to post when we have some signal or WiFi. Until then, keep the rubber side down!!!
