The De Tomaso Pantera turns 40 this year!
I think this was a Pantera my neighbor had:
Local auto restorer has one and when he opened his shop he had it, along with a few other vehicles from his collection on display. I commented on the Pantera, saying something like "I was always surprised they didn't sell more than they did."
He replied "Go sit in it and maybe you'll figure it out."
I could barely get in the thing! Granted, I'm tall, but I think you would have to be about 5'8" or less to actually be comfortable in it. I hated him for smashing one of my dreams........................
and thanked him 'cuz now I have an excuse (other than lack of funds) for not buying one.
Yeah, they are uncomfortable and primitive as hell, but once you get in it and turn the key, you understand it. Nothing like that rumble coming from just a few inches behind you.
How about an imatation?
I guess it's OK, in a Fleshlight sort of way. Rather have the real deal.
I knew a guy had a white one. Ex airline pilot and crack glider pilot. He lived in a single wide at a gliderport, had three gliders, a Pantera and an attitude.
It hailed a lot, that car looked like it had been attacked by rugrats with ball-peen hammers, sadly.
RIP Hod Taylor.
A neighbor had one new. List price in 1972 or 1973 was $10,000 at the Ford Dealer. The transmission (ZF) cost much more than the engine (Ford Windsor 351). DeTamaso did weird things with Benelli's too. He always wanted to make exotic stuff on the cheap. As you can see it didn't last.
Sweet looks combined with fuel starvation and chronic overheating.
They are great cars if you are slight of build...fit me perfect at 5'8" and 155lbs. Driving one is an experence that you will never forget....and if you ever EVER get a chance to track one DO IT.
And your ass rocketed forward in combination of hearing ... nothing at all after a few minutes.
Friend of mine has one way nicer than those pieces of shit...
Immaculate, has a 347 Crawford motor with a huge fucking blower.
I'll see if I can grab a pic...
The car Tim Horton died in. Cool car for sure
Fixered the Pantera used a 351 Cleveland not windsor.
Thank you. Corrected to Cleveland instead of Windsor for my trivia mind data bank, even though I am never going to buy one. I don't fully know why but where I lived (still do) but there were a plethora very cool cars running about, XJ6, & V12 Jags, 911 Porsches, BMW's (Bavaria's, 2002, 3.0 cs) etc. etc, most I eventually got to drive for a short spell - oh, and a Jensen Interceptor III, that was quite cool, too, but the Pantera just down the street guy never let me ride in it, much less drive it. The guy went from a '69 Subaru wagon type thing to the Pantera, so evidentially he was completely losing it while making more money than ever before.

Very cool cars. I wish more companies would offer mid-engine stuff these days.
Bring a trailer just had a link in its daily email to
a sweet 67 De Tomaso Mangusta project on ebay.
:huh that first one had so much cam it cackled like a funny car. I bet it was a joy to drive on the street..NOT!
The De Tomaso Pantera is the Rodney Dangerfield of the exotic car world
It don't get no respect.
out of the box the car needed some finishing and adjustment But
with an American V8 that any American auto repair shop could
change a water pump on and the Bullet Proof ZF transaxle
your basic major components were solid. and dependable
I don't think you will find a Pantera for sale today that has not had
the bugs worked out. Cooling Seats and electrical (just to mention a few)
also ....For the Money I don't think you can find a better Super car
and one that will have parts at the local NAPA store.
And that V8 car sound. WOW like a car should sound
