I've just read on the Dakar website that Elmer Symons died today during the fourth stage of the rally. He was 29 and from South Africa. His brother, Kingsley was providing race support for him in his first attempt at the rally.

My condolences go to his family and his many friends.

It's always tragic but never unexpected for the Dakar rally. IMO the pace is too fast and the mix of bikes, cars, trucks and buggies is a recipe for disaster. RIP :cry

Very sad - best thoughts to family, friends and hope the rest of the riders finish safely.

I haven't followed the race closely, but is it a regular occurrence for kids/locals to be hit by the race vehicles?

The race organization distributes picture flyers around all the villages before the race comes through. The flyers warn the people to stay back from the race course, and don't run across the course when vehicles are coming through. There have been a couple of times when locals were run over.

Thanks for the info - I'm sure for villagers along the way, especially kids, it's a challenge to NOT go near the course when they hear/see all the action coming their way.

Oh my god that is horrible news. I was fortunate to meet Elmer at the Nevada Rally Experience and even got to eat his dust. What a sad day it is. He will be missed.

Elmer, brothers James & Philip and his sister Eileen were regular guests at our house growing up. Kinglsey, his dad passed a few years back. My brother was staying with the Symons' at their farm in Ladysmith when their mother was tragically killed in a car crash. Elmer was just a kid then. All very tragic and I am deeply saddened. :cry

    Sincere condolences to the family.

This is really sad news :cry, the loss of a great racer, a fellow rider and such a genuine guy.

I had the pleasure of meeting him for the first time at the Red Bull KTM Last Man Standing event late last year. He took the time out to stand in the freezing cold and yarn for a good half hour.

My condolences go out to his family, RIP Elmer.
