DAY 2: Two Mtns and A Valley (Continued...)

Time to start heading back towards PSR. We planned to backtrack over Hunter Mtn instead of the usual route or Racetrack and Lippincott. Done those many times and I just think the riding over Hunter is more fun :ricky

Pace was much faster on the way back and I didn't take too many pics ...

... but I did catch Mike launching off this step near White Top :thumb
    [IMG]

We did make one quick stop to check out Lost Burro Cabin.

Scruffy on the outside, but lots if 'interesting' artifacts inside.

Racing back across Hidden Vally :pynd
    [IMG]

I chased Bob's rear wheel all the way over Hunter Mtn :ricky
    [IMG]

The kid knows how to keep the little 250 moving fast :nod
    [IMG]

I hung back at South Pass make a pit stop and check for cell reception (none).

This also gave me clear air for the ride out Saline Valley Rd.

Couple miles from the Hwy190 I made one last stop to search for the desert peace symbol. I have looked for it before and couldn't find it. Now I know why. It is much larger than I thought and also fairly overgrown. Things don't change fast in this desert, so I guess it is pretty old. This all makes it very hard to spot from the ground.

Here is the 4-point at the center.

Obligatory DVNP photo op before railing back down to PSR.

Made it back to camp in time for :dukegirl followed by some :beer and some :kumbaya

    End of Day 2.

Matt, the spur that heads north before it gets tough near the end is a fun two-track that's about 1.25 miles long. :thumb

Looks like you didn't quite make it to the end of the trail and then the last foot-scramble to the top. Nevertheless, you got the gist of it.

And yes, some spurs and exploring to be done out there, even off the broken cabin near the end - that trail also goes off rambling north for a good bit and is very fun.

Y'all should have joined us, we had a zippy good time up there on Saturday. :D

Made it down to this little saddle where all tire tracks ended, but could still see an old cut ramping down from there.

I figured a couple of our group had not made it up the big hill climb a little ways back, so turned around and went back up to the high point without getting off to take a look around.

That's it. Park there, hike up the hill to the right of of there, viola - panoramic view of entire Death Valley. :clap

There have been enough boots hiking up there's a visible trail now - a can't miss. :thumb

A quick word re the 2 bikes I brought with me. Both were gifted by owners that wanted them gone, but wanted to see them on the road again, not broken down for parts.
The '82 Virago XV750 had 42K miles and had been in storage 8 years
    [IMG]
The 2000 KLR250 had 104K miles(!) commuter bike near death, hadn't run in 5 years
    [IMG]
Both were basically all there, not sure I was (beware of FREE anything)

I carpooled with Meetup.com ride group acquaintances, AdventureDave82, PaprikaJoe, Ms PaprikaJoe. I picked them up in SLO and we made our way to DV / PSR, arrived by dusk and set up camp.

Thurs am rested, did checks on the bikes, made sure all tools and supplies were packed. Thurs Noon went on Rob's @rjnutt Get Out the Kinks ride to China Garden, Darwin, Talc City. That's Rob in the background contemplating a fish dinner.
    Yup, thare be fish

Fun run over to Darwin, med-deep gravel, easy 2-track, feeling good
    [IMG]
Saw the dance hall, got inspired. Did the tail bag two-step, hooked my heel and fell on my ass. Robs like, DaFuq? Was my only fall of the day....
Lots of great 2-track over to Talc City. Low and med speed whoops, catching a little air coming up out of dry washes. High speed graded road runs, then railed it back to camp on 190E. Made me feel like a teenager again. Thanks for the great ride Rob!

Rode Fri with Chris K, Arrin/Cindy, Jozseph/Wife. We were supposed to do the Chloride Cliffs ride but were talked out of it. We wanted an easy day so headed to Beatty for gas, then to Rhyolite for a Casino photo op, then to Titus Canyon, Ubehebe Crater.

Sat dove head first into the deep end. Rode w Randall @r3r3r to Ballarat, Pleasant Cyn, Rodgers Pass, South Park, et al. Randall gets the photo credits here. I was too busy NOT DYING to pull my camera out.

Big thanks to Jimmy @1224R for playing Mother Goose, and Phil @Suzuki Phil for patiently propping me up all day.

My third flop going up Rodgers Pass I acquired a shin contusion. My leg began swelling / cramping so by the end of the day I couldn't stand on the pegs or kick start the KLR.

By the time we got back to Ballarat I was done in. Didn't dare shut the bike off. Randall told me to put a rock on his camp chair as a sign of safe return. I left him something to remember me by (see 2nd to last pic)

Sun am we packed up and headed home, sunburned, tired, and thoroughly satisfied.

Fuggitt. No more captions, BBcode, MS Word, Flickr....just look at the pretty pics.

This is a picture of "Gomer", my 2008 KTM 450 XC-F. It's named Gomer because it's a pile.

A few days before leaving for DVNR, Gomer seized up. Next year, I'll have Gomer and a back-up bike ready to go. Sorry I missed it this time around, but I'm LOVING all the photos/stories from those that did get there.

I'll see you all next year.
