Precis / Mungo,

I'll take 4 if theyre $70 or less... which I add up 17 wanted from this thread. Maybe ask Ballards or Motohansa what they will do for 20 of them? If neither of you two are actually organising it, let me know. Im ok at phone operation :D

Still waiting for a reply from 'Hansa, or 3 different ZA suppliers; thanks for doing the adding-up - not my strong point! :clap
Anyone know where these things are actually made? A cash order of >17 units has got to be appealing to a manufacturer, especially if their retailers can't be bothered to reply. :huh

I just messaged a mate from Cape Town. It might be easier for him to haggle in-store and then post them to us at an actual post cost. Its 4:30 in the arvo there now, so we wont hear back until tomorrow I guess.

How much would we be happy to pay?
It will be about $100 postage (120R + 9.5R per 100g). Dustriders in SA is selling them for 560R. So (20x560R+1000R) x 0.11 (Rand to $) x 1.045 (4.5% currency conversion) = $1405. Thats $70.25 each delivered. Then there is local postage if needed. GST also unless we do two postages.

Maybe we would only buy if we get them for 500R?

If they ended up more than $70, I will be more tempted to just go LC 12L bladders.

I have an LC 12l bladder and it is quite large due to the seam allowance. It also smells once it has fuel in it. I was interested in these as Feral5 seems to think they don't smell, in which case I have room in my panniers back pocket for 2 x 5 l bladders, which would be good, as the only place I can find to strap a 12l LC bladder is on top of my gear, which is a lot more top heavy. Am I being too optimistic here?

We shouldn't forget there are other options here. I also use the acerbis 5.5l auxillary tanks, they are bombproof and don't smell, but 2 x 5l jerry jans would be the same. I went on a long trip with a mate who had 12 plastic jerry can in his Andy Strap panniers, with his gear on top, worked a treat and didn't stink his gear out. Of course they are still bulky when empty, but is that really such an issue, given that they don't weigh much?

Cheers,

Adrian

Heard anything yet Precis?
My man on the ground has started sending me some prices. He is getting a quote on shipping from DHL, so we will see if that makes or breaks the deal.
So far its looking good for under $70 delivered to Melb.

I bought 2 MSR Dromerderys @ 6l for $155, landed.

I tested one over the course of 2 weeks hanging upside down with 5 liters of fuel in it.
They are a great set up , the shape is great and there are heaps of tie down options. you can also attach a hose for drinking or tapping out.
It also has 3 different caps which all work differently filling and unfilling .

The result was ,

It smells a fair bit , it must be permeating thru the lining , which is impregnated into the fibers.
the smaller cap leaked fuel .
But i used it anyway. it got me out of the s#@t so no regrets .

There is a ride report on here somewhere of some South Africans doing a trip into Angola, good ride report . one fella used goon bags for his fuel and they worked and did the job , but they did start stretching under their own weight.

Has anyone tried just a simple camelback!!??

umm I have tested goon bags
filled a couple of different ones n left them in the sun
one split along the seams
the other one, the spout / cap melted from the petrol

MSR Dromedary are the go!

goon bags do make great water bladders though, I just wrap them in duct tape to strengthen the bag

Ok guys, Precis has dropped the ball here! I beleive he has messaged everyone telling us a number that Motohansa just told me they would never do for individual sales. Some other of you was on the phone to rob at the same time!
Precis, next time, arrange the deal for 20 and dont leave the rest of us dangling.

So a group buy is still on the cards. $75 + postage for 20 of them from here in aus, or $70 delivered to Melbourne from SA.

Pm me to confirm you want one (and how many) and I will order on Wednesday. If you didnt see this message by then, sorry.

This was the best quote, from Bikegear in ZA:

"The units are R 680.00 (A$75.46) each.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
Postage is the scary Part, you looking at +- R 1500.00 (A$166.46) for 10units.
We can get a solid quotation when we have all the numbers in."

Based on that, ($90+) it's hardly viable; if you can do better, good for you - the other stockists/suppliers didn't respond.
As several have pointed out, there are alternatives.

$99 pick up from my local bike shop.
Hope it goes to keeping them in business and employing a local.

Thanks for spotting the bladder Dave, it's just what I was looking for.
