A friend of mine built a diesel bike from an old Suzuki Katana frame and a Punsun engine. He added a turbocharger and runs it at Bonneville with and without a sidecar. He holds the record for the class at around 110 mph, IIRC. I'll see if he minds if I post some pics. I was his pit crew last year but he had turbo problems & was not competitive...wait till next year.
That's sweet! I'm thinking use the entire front, suspension and all to drive the bike and hack, build the frame around it, with seating in front. Setup fuel and cooling behind the drivetrain.
You could get crazy mileage out of it, plus drag a small pod style trailer.
I have to get back to welding and fab 1st, should've stayed with what I enjoyed most as a career.
Simply bad ass! That's exactly what I think of when I dream of a diesel powered motorcycle! Ugly, long, loud, and not shiny in any way unless it's functional!

I have an R26 frame but not much else. So no drive line . . . . nothing. . . .
Thinking a 418cc Diesel single would be a nice power unit, and I use that word loosly
Turn it 90 degrees and adapt it to the BMW airhead gearbox. Oh and I would want electric start :)

Been around for nearly ten years already.
a single is amazingly slow, you might have a look at a punsun or kipor Vtwin.
still slow (18-20 HP) but at least enough power to propel a bike without getting overtaken by bicycles....
if you want to use the BMW driveline you might need to do something about the gearing , max revs for small diesels is 3600 RPM ,
or you might end up with a 30 MPH top speed.
Yes, I crunched the numbers yesterday and think if I go the single route I will have to go for a chain drive.

Interesting projects diesel bikes, i think it depends on what is wanted from the bike, is it performance? is it looks or is it the finished concept its looks style and will all this meet expected performance needs. ?
Typical car industrial engines are not ideal size generally big for motorcycles and pretty ugly even the modern subaru robin diesels are a austere looking thing not exactly traditional motorcycle looking.
So vague as all that must seem i think i will start by describing what i personally want in a diesel bike and what i would use to achieve my aim.
I would use a 150cc to 200cc size tubular frame in my case a BSA bantam harley hummer type frame, because i have some, same forks wheels tank etc. late 50s styling. this should be light enough and handle the 4hp to 8hp of a small single cylinder 250cc to 400cc diesel engine fine.
staying with the looks of the engine farymann and some hatz diesels look very traditional round barrels neat crankcases and the ansilaries pump etc do not look too obtrusive and i would go with one of these , and probably a farymann off an old wacker plate low power but small bike sized and will in a small bike give slightly better than moped performance and still be proportionate enough to look as if it was factory turned out with thought and good detailing.
I think something like this through a pre unit construction gearbox will offer a single cylinder chain drive lightweight diesel, capable of 45 to 50mph and be a low speed admitted but practical little diesel bike that would prove an interesting and full filling project you could actually use .

Here is a traditional BMW single conversion which looks a litte factory.
This is a tidy Diahatsu 950 triple with BMW parts.

The first one looks as you say almost factory, i like it, the daihatsu is a good conversion and will i imagine perform great but it does look a car type engine because it is.
Stewart marine diesel could be an option. .
My preference is for aircooled single or inline twin, bit like the old Sunbeam motorcycles

Now that looks classy and proportionate . i like it.
On the Hero diesel scooter thing that Hero screwed EBR over on paying for the engineering they did: The engine drives a generator, hence the "use it as a portable generator" the drive is electric. The "two wheel drive" adds a second hub motor for the front wheel. Kinda neat idea in an agricultural way. But I wouldn't buy anything with the Hero name on it if I had a gun to my head after they hired EBR to design several things and did not pay for it.
I have COPD and can't stand the stench of hot diesel. The only way I would ever have one is if I had a ready supply of corn oil (smells like popcorn) or peanut oil to use.

a sommer diesel , basically a enfield bullet with a 500 cc hatz shoehorned in.
nice bike , i once did a test ride on one.
the enfield route is the easiest way to build a diesel ,

So making a few calls the Lifan 13HP isnt available in Oz any more.
Can anyone point to where I could buy a suitable engine, Hatz or Sommer?
