If you did not want to spring for Adobe Photoshop...would you consider any of the following?

    Micrografx Picture Publisher
    JASC Paint shop Pro
    Adobe Photo Elements
    Any others?

How 'bout for a photo dumbass that thinks masks and despeckles are halloween terms?

I use full-blown Photoshop at work, but I keep a copy of the free irfanview for quick things and sequential viewing. Great software that will cover most of your needs for free.

Paint shop pro is good & powerful with a good user base and a lot of net support. Elements is also good for the hobbyist - I have so many copies around I use them as coasters, seems every piece of gear we buy includes a copy. Not familiar with the Micrografix app.

That's what I was going to say. Photoshop's terrific, and the reviews say that with Elements, they have finally made a cut-down version that includes many of the most powerful features.
