I'm planning to attend D2D next year (GSA 12, riding from Minneapolis, 5 days up, 2 days for the "non-rally," 4 days for Dempster, 5 days home, riders welcome to join me for all or part. Little or no camping -- I'm a hot shower guy). I need a couple of pieces of information: dates for the "non-rally," a resource who can do a pre- and post-Dempster tire swaps for me, and a destination address where I can ship the tires (if someboy's got Heidenau K60s or equivalent available locally, I'd be glad to buy them there. I was in Dawson a couple of years ago and didn't see a shop that had tires, although I didnt need them and wasn't looking). Anyway, thats the plan. Any help appreciated. It's a long, cold winter here in Minnesota and my entertainment consists primarily of planning for next summer's rides. Thanks! If someones knows how to make hotel reservations in Dawson during the off-season, I'd appreciatevthat info, as well.
Good thing there is The Dick to beat on and save peoples asses, typing on an unlit keyboard in the dark can lead to mistakes which with this crew is unforgivable. Minny dude, talk to me! Apparently I may not ever remember our conversation but I just might be a lot of help! I almost liked the humble KHuddy! Hee hee hee, wink wink, know what I mean?
Dates: Thurs/Fri June 19-20 Good father/son outfit in Fairbanks that sell Heidenau's: http://www.advcycleworks.com/ And there are usually a couple different ways to get tires taken to Dawson City by car/truck for D2D from the Anchorage area as well. Good luck and have fun, Mark H.
What are the advantages of one route over the other? IE. Whitehorse to Dawson or Watson Lake to Dawson? Perhaps a side trip to Skagway or a Side trip to Hyder?
Pretty much the same routes. Watson Lake to Dawson takes one thru Whitehorse. The only other common route is from Tok thru Chicken to Dawson. There is the Campbell Hwy that runs from Watson Lake to Carmacks on the Klondike Hwy north of Whitehorse. It is all dirt.
I must have been looking at the Klondike Hwy. I thought google street view shows it as paved. Good to know it is dirt, thanks.
Nah was me got mixed up. Yes it was the Campbell Hwy. Thought it was Paved. I just checked again, mostly dirt but some pavement. I must Have been lucky enough the 1st time to just view only paved sections And assumed it was all paved. Rechecking I found the majority is unpaved. Also curious: How is the cell coverage on the Cassiar Hwy, Alcan, and Whitehorse to Dawson? Spotty, any or none? I know I've seen a posting somewhere but sometimes the search function is less than ?. Any advice on the side trip, Skagway or Hyder?
dwdrv66, are you one of the guys from Iowa City (Gina's BMW) I met overlooking the bridge ouside Teslin, YT? This would have been about the week before the 2011 D2D. Fejras from Sioux City
Triple J ? Any idea when we will hear if our reservations are confirmed or not? If other arrangements are necessary, ie Triple J booked up it will be nice to have some lead time.
I talked to Dennis yesterday and he told me to tell people to phone the toll free line during the day and leave a message if there is no one to answer. They have someone in the office everyday during the day during the week. He thinks about one half of the rooms they blocked for D2D are taken.
For what it's worth, I stayed a couple nights at the TJ last year and it was good. Food and drink also good. Good choice (I don't know the politics involved in the switch; but I assume there were some.) As for The Campbell, I was warned to stay off it last year, folks in Watson Lake said trucks have torn it up badly; might be different in 2014 though. Stop off at the sign forest and ask for the lady with the old school bus (her name eludes me), she will know the skinny on the road conditions. Also skill at riding in mud and ruts might make it doable for some and not for others. YMMV.
I passed on riding the Cambell in 2010 as it was raining and locals recommended against it. 2013 the weather was clear and yes it was rutted up in several spots but was enjoyable ride. Fuel at Ross River and stayed at the Hotel in Faro. Think I'll go to NewFoundland in 2014 but will return to attend my 3rd D2D someday.
Have been trying to fit this in for quite awhile. Now that I'm permanently unemployed D2D is on my list for 2014.
You won't be disappointed! I'll be there again making this my 3rd and possibly last time.......we'll see....hope to see you there......what route are you thinking of?
wife unit and I will be in the area but due to HER tight schedule for returning to work (work is over rated) we will be there on Wednesday but will leave Thursday morning for Alaska :eek1
