Yeh, no dramas. Get your permits in early. There are restricted periods

I'm booked in to do the Maralinga tour in a couple of days (10th), kinda excited about it, it's been high on the to-do list since they started the tours...

$225 for the 2 nights camping, day tour, permits and such, a bit pricey but not bad considering it's the only way you can see the area....

:clap I did the tour last year... great setup with the two nights camping and full day tour. Very interesting with the history, background and events that took place out there... it left a big impression on me.

This guy, the guide, has been involved out there for lots of years and really knows his thing - beyond the usual numbers and facts...

I can only recommend it... if any interest in the history - including politics :hmmmmmof the outback.

Also, next year they'll probably be opening Emu Rd between Maralinga and Emu Junction for people doing the tour, so you can come in here, or go out, to the north... to Anne Beadell Hwy... Check out the Emu/Totem sites in the one trip...

Make sure you do it before you get a dicky ticker. A mate of mine went out there and it flattened the battery on his pacemaker. True story.

The Emu explosions were the first by the British. They moved the testing south to Maralinga, as Westerly winds was blowing radiation where they didn't want it. Just been through the Anne Beadell, and seen the Emu sites. Totem 1 was 15th October 1953, and Totem 2 about a month later, and only about a km away from Totem 1.
Check out Pg 1 of my ride report -

Thread bump.... No issue getting WPA permits to go to Emu and through the ABH ... I initially applied for a 2 day permit, a defence guy called me and suggested I reapply for a week just in case I have any issues, he said they don't care how long you get a permit for and he implied the sky would fall if I broke down in there and my permit expired, or such...

Intriguing. Guess I'm not going on the tour.

Boringly, it looks like I'm getting a new lead for my defib soon so will ask the Ep guys what they know about this to fill in the time.

Could be wrong, but I always thought that the first tests took place at the Montebello Islands (west of Dampier) - 3/10/'52. Refer: https://australianmap.net/monte-bello-islands/
