On April 23rd we embarked on a trip up to Grannite Falls. I wanted to ride up the “Mountain loop Hwy” as far as we could anyway as in the winter they gate it off due to snow. We had a great breakfast in town then proceeded with our ride. 64475DF8-3394-4C42-96B4-2CC19A8A22C4.jpeg Here is where the road is gated off. Soon in one of our adventures we’ll make it past this point. 31FD38D3-3EF0-4469-ABC2-47329828CD5D.jpeg 6CF23773-7A86-4F93-B3A8-6DDA0AD70A92.jpeg Nice bridge with stunning views! Well we eventually left Spokane after a great visit for 3 days. We hit Interstate 90 and soon as always with the slab got sick of it. North towards Odessa we went. Ahhh now this is much better! A view of nothing sometimes just seems to fit the bill! A3362930-DD21-44C8-8172-AF344EBB690E.jpeg CC322484-A0A3-46A3-AF39-B9F3C2382787.jpeg 7FFDCD0F-DE1C-47AE-938A-1265C41B0413.jpeg We had looked for a place to eat in Odessa and it had nothing. After a bit west I turned towards Wilson Creek and look what we found! The lady that owned it was sweet and cooked us up a great burger and the locals chillin’ were a hoot!! E1F55BED-E4B4-4C4A-9F7F-4B273C729FC5.jpeg after getting back on the road we headed home via Stevens pass. Yes we stopped in Leavenworth on the way home..of course!

Not finally getting to the good sh*t, it has all been good sh*t! Great pics, trips and places. Y’know, in the dedicated forum for these bikes I think there’s only about six of us who actually use the bikes instead of just talk about them, so it’s great to see another rider. :nod

Howdy!! Going to talk about the bike for second. Over time I had replaced the muffler with one I had laying around off of a Kawasaki ZX9R. I lowered it a bit and installed stainless screen material (sink drain) to act as a spark arrester. I always heard horror stories of running hard paniers offroad and hitting things so I came up with my cheap alternative. These brackets fit into factory panier mounts etc and are made out of a bicycle rack! These will give me options. A8080FBC-BC07-41D1-BEC7-42AEB8CB9DFE.jpeg After measuring and surfing the internet I happen to find these ammo boxes the perfect size and are water tight. They are mounted via some channel that hooks to the top of the factory plastic mounts then secured via the nylon straps modified from the bike rack. The channel is riveted to the boxes. C9313CC3-702E-4A9F-9788-9D4DE80356A6.jpeg So here we have all our shit on the bike back then. Left box is “garage” stuff. Tool roll underneath. My clothes in soft panier. Right box is “kitchen” etc stuff for camp. Honeybunnies clothes in right soft panier. Blue bags are the mats (1ea) and inside those we can carry rain gear (frogg togz) and extra clothes in ziploc compression bags. Black roll across the back is a chair. 644409A5-9967-4350-A9B5-AEDFC3E3B01B.jpeg Hooked to crash bars on both sides...one is stupid led string o lantern lights for tent we never used and other is stakes and rope etc for camp. Tent and down comforter in double stuff yellow and I cant remember what was on top!! Haha! Trunk had toiletries etc and misc stuff. 2 up isnt easy and we were going to out and about for 18? Days. Oh and soft paniers are attached via velcro straps. A4F3D5CB-C968-4344-B1A2-A206BE455434.jpeg

So what we were about to embark on was our first mega trip that included full blown backcountry. Gnarly stuff included (not that we really knew) The highlight was going to be our first ADV event the “Wallowa Jamboree” in Enterprise Oregon. I had a 21 day vacation lined up so we made it a Super road trip. It would take us up and across the top of Washington, catch part of the WABDR, down to Spokane and visit family, meet up with some fellow ADVer’s in Idaho who we had never met, grab a section of the IDBDR route, dabble into Montana and back into Idaho, catch another section of the IDBDR, over to the Hells Canyon, up to the Wallowa jamboree in Enterprise, back up through Washingtons SE corner up to Spokane for family visit, 2 days of Sprint boat races with friends and backroads never taken west towards home. 2700 miles total, loads o fun, and best of all “0” problems!!

Ok here we go! Day 1 its up to Granite Falls! The Mountain loop hwy will be open this time! Breakfast at our favorite stop..BUZZ INN Steakhouse. This place is always loaded with the locals so it must be the place to be and rightfully so it is damn good. We usually park out front on main street where we can keep an eye on the bike. Also keep an eye on the “oldschool” hardware store across the street! We have always wanted to go check it out but havent. Our joke has always been “if we go in there i’ll come out with a new RUGER!” cause everytime we sit and have food the damn banner in window is calling my name!! Haha!! One of these days!! CDE594C1-5D95-47AF-B23B-3A29AD2D2300.jpeg So from Granite Falls the road starts out paved then goes to gravel past the gate in previous post. 17 miles I believe of beautiful country rivers edge. Lots of primitive camping along river. 33FA54F5-3CBE-40FF-806F-174FC1661D0F.jpeg It wasnt much beyond this sign that I locked up the brakes and semi skidded to a stop!! Big BLACK bear in the middle of the road!! We sat there for a bit about 50ft apart. He kinda got a little fussy then went off the side of road outta sight. We sat there for a minute...then I said”hang on!” I gassed it past that spot and we were on our way. A bit frazzled too! 96DECC07-4CD6-4A27-AA7F-3605402F92F4.jpeg BDB2EDB1-6734-477C-B7AD-B27F44BA79C1.jpeg

After our wonderful stay in Winthrop and I do mean wonderful...we headed east on 20. Eventually you get to Loup loup pass. It connects 97 and 20 and it is off of this pass that part of the WABDR is on. Loup loup canyon. It starts out like this but eventually we came upon a road closed sign. We spoke with a cabin owner who was driving his truck our way and said it was partially washed out further up. Said we could go a different route but I told him we’d just turn around if it was bad. Soon we saw an old Willy’s Jeep with a couple good ol boys headed our way. They had started the WABDR from Canada and said they were probably the first to make it over the following section closer to the border. I had been wondering about that section too as well as this piece. They said I could probably make both? Haha!! Not so sure now!! We said thanks and pushed on. Small water crossings here and there, then we came upon the wash. It was a hill with water flowing down it and no real path or track to speak of. Lots of rocks and boulders but I could see a line through it. A woman was standing along the edge looking on and a dude in his 4runner sitting there off to the side at the top. I sat at the bottom with water running under my feet. Honey said “I can get off?” I said “ no hang on” ! I mentally picked the line and cracked the throttle!! Up up and away we went!! FUlly loaded ripping it up that son of a beeeatch!! Close to top I let out a big “WUUUUHOOOO!!” and the guy smiled with a big grinner! We made it!! And boy did I have faith in my machine!! Hell yeah!!! 31D5D897-9AAE-4E47-882F-99FB30877ED2.jpeg AB3A1FBE-73E6-449B-AD33-8FA4624D2B78.jpeg After our adrenaline fueled run we came to the Ruby grade. I’m glad we went down it and not up. Tight hairpin boulder infused narrow two track. I putted down it and never set a foot down! No problem ooooh!! Heres the sign marking the former town. 14FDC3F0-E72E-4349-B3A0-7FD94EF8564B.jpeg Well it was just gravel into the town of Concunully. Time for a beer!! We deserved it! Cheers!! So I didnt want to push my luck on the next section seeings how it would most likely involve snow. I decided to take the gravel road up to the next town of Loomis and then continue on. 58CFFFD1-C64B-454B-9469-15598C8768E9.jpeg Shortly after this we saw a “road closed” sign. Nah lets go check. 62DFEDA1-4F71-49F8-9691-9BBC45EE13EF.jpeg And yeah I figured we’d just cruise right across. Honeybunny not so much. Another “hang on” and we got to the middle! Haha! Here we are and as far as we could make it. Rear tire just dug a hole. Here she is with water up to her knees!! Super trooper pushing with all she had!! 8D79356E-2CA9-4E17-9E3D-93B37678129F.jpeg
